Poll : Aside from Toad, which familiar in PHB is popular in your play group?

One of the oft-overlooked advantages of having a weasel, is SCENT. Having an empathic link with an animal with scent means that you will have a huge advantage against invisible foes. Also, reflex saves are one of the most important things for keeping your familiar alive!

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Interesting . . . I had the opposite impression. There aren't that many plant creatures in the Monster Manual. And some of those aren't very mobile. I'd rather have the animal control feat, because you have a broader range of possibilities, even though it would not be quite as unique as...

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Are you referring to Caliban's idea that it refers to creatures that the cleric created himself? That would be more than just a "call." It would be a house rule.

Yeah, please ask him! And be sure to tell me if he answers you. I'd really like to know.

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Yeah, that's the only way I can see to treat it, unless there's any more insights to be considered . . .

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Re: Re: Re: Re: Question about Turning and Commanding (I take it, this was what you were referring back to.) This is a helpful suggestion, but it does not solve the problem. For one thing, the creatures that Create Undead or even Create Greater Undead allow you to create are still much lower...

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Can't anyone shed any light on this problem? I still don't see the solution. Can I get a few more opinions please?

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

No. The commanded creatures count against your "maximum", which would be 8 HD. The 4 HD of commanded animals are not animal companions, technically. The druid would not have to give them attention and care while adventuring, as he would a true animal companion. The only sense in which they...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

On the contrary, most druids never have their maximum HD of animal companions. The maximum HD of animal companions for any druid is TWICE his level. It's just that he can only keep half his maximum when he goes adventuring. And he can't have a SINGLE companion that has more HD than his level...

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Question about Turning and Commanding But please look back at the first quotation in the first post on this thread. The SRD says that an evil cleric can command a creature with more HD than he has levels. If the cleric's level has to be double the creature's HD, then...

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Re: Re: Re: Re: Question about Turning and Commanding Thanks Caliban. Silly of me! Okay, so a lich cannot be commanded by a first level cleric. But what I still don't understand is this: Let's say your evil 1st level cleric tries to affect a zombie with three HD, and both his turning...

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Re: Liches You mean you can't turn a creature with more HD than your level?

    Question about Turning and Commanding

Re: Re: Question about Turning and Commanding I think that sounds right, although it also sounds remarkably powerful. In theory, a first level cleric could command a Lich (13 HD) by rolling a 12 on his turning damage roll, and then adding 1 for his level, even without including a CHA bonus!!

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

I started a new thread to discuss this question about commanding creatures with higher HD: http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33733

    Question about Turning and Commanding

How is it possible for an evil cleric to command undead that have more HD than he has levels? Help me with this. Here are the relevant passages from the SRD: BUT . . . I don't see how you are supposed to determine whether an evil cleric succeeds at commanding it, or merely rebukes it...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Dingleberry's question made me think of another issue: Evil clerics can command a single undead creature that has more HD than he has levels--but that would be the only undead creature he can command, and it requires complete concentration. So . . . 1) Can druids with Animal Control do that...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

The Animal (or Plant) Control feat is parallel to the ability of a good cleric to destroy or of an evil cleric to command undead. So, basically, the broke turning into two parts and made two feats out of it. The funny thing is that in the Control feat description, it says "you rebuke or...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

I overlooked this point in my first read. You are right that in some circumstances Animal Empathy would serve to get aggressive animals off your back. But not in all cases . . . that skill usually only works if you and the animal can observe each other for a full minute. If the animals are...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

Well, first of all, thank you SO MUCH for replying. I was looking forward to a good conversation. It's a bummer when you don't get replies. I don't think it is a bad thing for a feat to be useful only for one or two classes. There are tons of feats like that. Most of the feats in any of the...

Turning, Rebuking, and Commanding Animals and Plants

So, nobody uses these feats? My opinion is that the Plant ones are useless, but the animal ones are really cool. Why doesnt anyone use them?
