    A Barbarian with style!

Oh, that is SOOO cool! That's style! I might just do that. Of course, I don't have that many skill points, and some of the skills you mentioned aren't class skills for barbarians either. But, I could at least max JUMP and CLIMB, and spread the rest out among LISTEN and RIDE maybe. As a wild...

    Shooting into Melee

There is a variant rule in the DMG, which I highly recommend. It works very well, and is not as cumbersome as it might seem at first. It turns out to be a little more favorable to archers, but not in a way that is unbalancing, IMO. Also, I would say that this variant rule is a lot more...

    A Barbarian with style!

I should also mention that those ability scores are not final. I am using 28 point buy.

    A Barbarian with style!

Starting at second level. Doesn't have to be primarily a combat thing, if you can think of some other nifty ideas. The thing is, there is already a druid in the party, so I don't see much point in taking Track, or putting a bunch of points into Wilderness Lore (although a few might be cool)...

    A Barbarian with style!

I'm making a new wild elf barbarian character. I want to be creative and have an interesting character, preferably interesting beyond just the fact that he can deal damage. I want to have a trademark thing that I do particularly well, whether it be running and jumping, mounted combat, or...

    2d10 skill checks

Thanks for your comments, everybody! This is not a bad idea. Jeph's suggestion is worth considering too. I'm not sure that any of these ideas is inherently better than any other. The idea is just to recognize that it makes things interesting to provide players with various ways of...

    2d10 skill checks

I've entertained this as a house rule for all players and all skills, but here I propose it as a feat. If you can come up with a better title, I'd appreciate it. How would you rate this feat in terms of power? Do you foresee any special problems with certain skills? TRUSTY SKILLS With...

    Experience

If you are using published modules, especially if they are long ones, keep an eye on things. The module might anticipate the characters' leveling after a certain point and begin to throw tougher stuff at them.

    Variant skill class: Wisdom based!!!!

I think Shiner's idea is well worth considering further. Giving exta points based on WIS helps to avoid balance problems. Here's how: Let's say you have a wizard and you're likely to take Knowledge Arcana anyway. If you allow the player to spend extra points on that skill, then it doesnt...

    Variant skill class: Wisdom based!!!!

I did this in my campaign! Well, almost. I didn't include perform among the options. But I like that idea too. It's good to know another person came up with the idea independently. It worked well in my campaign. It really helped the character-building, because every player knew that...

    what else can i make?

Why not build a complete castle, with re-arrangeable component modules? In other words, a couple of towers, a main hall with a gateway and drawbridge. Basically ... an elaborate "dollhouse" that you could either use as your character's base of operations, or (if you could re-arrange it in...

    Skill Focus

I agree. It really isn't very interesting. I kinda like your ideas for modified Skill Focus, but I kinda don't. First of all, it is somewhat more interesting, because it makes the PC more reliable with that skill, without making him more able to achieve dazzling new heights. Re-rolling 5 or...

"Flavor" (as in "flavor-text"), does it irk you?

Well, I certainly agree that 'fluff' is worse than 'flavor.' If your conscience is at ease with using 'flavor', I will still regard you as a man with some principles. Here's an idea: how taking that whole category of the stuff that has been called "flavor" and "fluff" and just calling it...

    Rogue: Dex 8

I'd like to know where to find that feat. My first reaction is that it is over-powered. If there is such a feat, please tell me it carries some kind of penalty to the attack roll. Getting an automatic chance to eliminate your adversary's dex bonus is just too much!

    Rogue: Dex 8

But isn't feinting kinda similar to using Expertise? I think they are about equally difficult, and equally easy to do. Not every big brute knows how to feint--brutes don't tend to be that subtle. Remember the scene where Drizzt is training Wulfgar. (Not that this carries any authority, but...

    Skill Focus

Wow. Glad to know about that! Anybody have a sense of how common it is to give +3?

    Rogue: Dex 8

If you want my off-the-cuff opinion, I'd say Sense Motive and Bluff would not be allowed while raging. It takes a full minute, at least, to use Sense Motive for most purposes. However, if all you want to do is discern a feint, I'd say it should be allowed to use it, though perhaps with a...

    Skill Focus

Some people give three skill points for the Skill Focus feat, instead of two. How common is that? Do you do it in your campaign? Also, why is it that there aren't any +2/+2 feats, like Persuasive, Trustworthy, Athletic that work well for classes other than bards and rogues (except for...

    Animal Characters

Alas, I wish you were right. But the Polymorph Other spell description specifically says "The subject . . . needs a humanlike voice for verbal components and humanlike hands for somatic components." I take "humanlike" to mean anything that is normally capable of articulate speach. A dolphins...

According to the spell description for Polymorph Other, you would not retain the ability to speak.
