    Vestapalk

New preview from Threats to the Nentir Vale. The thought of Vestapalk with Tiktag riding him for safety is actually a rather adorable one. I like the way their relationship is represented mechanically, as well.

    Rule of Three: 05/16/2011

It's all about timelines. Oh, and werewolves. Actually, the timelines are only partially satisfying. "Sometime this summer" is not a very precise answer. Neither is "June" but it's a touch more specific at least.

    Starspawn

I'm more or less thinking of it as like the Greek city-states (with the Far Realm being the Persians for the purposes of this metaphor). Independent states that can recognize a larger threat, but go back to squabbling whenever that threat seems to have passed. I'm thinking that the death of...

    Starspawn

Currently, I'm running a Dark Sun game with a level 5 group. The basic setup of the campaign is as follows: Heroic: The group deals with merchant houses and their squabbles. Paragon: The group deals with templars and other more important groups. Epic: The group deals with Sorcerer-Kings and...

    Tweaking party composition

You could also consider a blackguard - would be a decent striker with a solid defender element. Also works nicely as a foil to the paladin in the group, lots of potential rp there.

    Persistent Harrier

It's just like the other battlemind features - triggers at the beginning of an encounter or not at all.

    Powerplayers

"Born Under a Bad Sign" and "Auspicious Birth" are both vague enough and mechanically useful enough that a lot of DM's will allow them, SoW or not. Nothing unreasonable about that. Why would MoP be banned any more than Player Handbook: Tiefling or Psionic Power? It's not a campaign setting, the...

Player wants to be with the bad guys

Chances are, the more you demonize the people he wants to play as, the more he wants to play them. It is, in fact, exactly like drow. I had an issue like this with one of the players in my Dark Sun campaign, who insisted on playing a templar no matter what. I threw some dried-up memory moss in...

    Rule of Three 5/9/2011

I just hope that the fact that psionics won't be getting essentialized doesn't mean there's no more support for them coming. I'd still like to see a real psionic striker (rather than a damage-optimized optimized battlemind or ardent) in the game at some point.

    Themes article up

So here's a question (which probably has a really obvious answer, I'm a touch sleep-deprived at the moment though), but once you're a level 5 Order Adept, would you be able to retrain your level 2 class/race utility into a wizard class/utility? Or would you only be given the option for utilities...

    Themes article up

The thing that gets me is that this article is from the same author as much of the DSCS, including themes. Theoretically that would mean these should be even better, since they've had time to work out the glitches (of which there weren't many - DS on the whole remains a solid product)...

    Themes article up

I like the alchemist, I can see some potential there as options expand over time. The others are basically underwhelming. Certainly don't hold a candle to the Dark Sun themes. That said, there are three more articles. This may very well be the weakest of them. Or the best. I guess we'll see.

    Gloomwrought Looks Good!

Just took the leap and pre-ordered it. I've liked everything I've seen so far, and I'm fairly certain my Dark Sun campaign will end up in the Grey soon enough. Should be able to work some of it in, though obviously not the city itself*. * - Except perhaps as a skeletal city, tended by the...

You Wanted Character Themes, You Got 'Em - Dragon 399 ToC

From Isaac Newton to priests to Chinese Emperors. It's not quite as all-encompassing as "explorer" but certainly a wide range of people historically gave alchemy a try. Yes and no. I've said elsewhere that I think in some ways themes are what backgrounds should have been, but they're more than...

You Wanted Character Themes, You Got 'Em - Dragon 399 ToC

Look no further than history - you had princes, criminals, merchants, scholars, and soldiers all acting as "explorers" at various times. Similarly, just about anybody could practice alchemy. That's what themes embody - something that transcends class.

    What are themes?

They've started implementing that in Heroes of Shadow - shades and vryloka both get racial powers they can select instead of utilities. That, too, was a step in the right direction, I think.

Rule of Three and THEMES! FINALLY THEMES!!!!

If you want to see immediate actions being abused, play in a party with a battlemind, ranger, and artificer. I've seen first-hand how annoyed our DM can get with it (I'm the battlemind in such a scenario), because against anything but a solo the players are effectively taking more turns than the...

Do you remain Stealthed if you attack yourself?

Yeah, I was trying to make a (bad) joke.

Do you remain Stealthed if you attack yourself?

Someone willing to attack themselves would become an immediate threat to themselves, for more than one reason, I suspect. Still, silly.
