    D&D 5E (2014) Free5e on Kickstarter

Dale Critchley of Wyrmworks Publishing launched the Free5e Kickstarter today: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wyrmworkspublishing/free5e-a-free-open-source-dungeons-and-dragons-alternative The intent is to build three full core books for 5e that are 100% Creative Commons and able to be...

What makes a TTRPG purchase "worth it" to you?

Really fantastic thread and one I’m paying attention to as both a publisher and a customer. I like to think I have different layers of potential purchases. As a publisher, such purchases are a business expense so I’m in a different boat than most people but I consider $20 an experimental price...

How Do You Keep Track of All Your RPG Books?

I don’t have a great system for physical books. For PDFs I use /RPGs/game system/publisher/type/product.pdf without nesting that deep if I don’t need to. I might skip publisher if it’s just one publisher for a system and I can skip type if there aren’t enough PDFs to bother to split up types...

Unbelievable Scale of AI’s Pirated-Books Problem

To me, the argument comes down to this: OpenAI and other companies are being valuated at hundreds of billions of dollars. They'd be worth nothing if they didn't have this material. Therefore this material has value. Value they should pay for. If the value of that information is nothing, OpenAI...

What's the best fantasy game for solo play?

Ironsworn is free to play and it's really fun.

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

Some stuff is significantly more ephemeral than others. Sigil's (short) rise and fall is an example. I don't think we get to keep whatever they built if WOTC decides to pull it down, is that correct?

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

This is two different "everyone"s in this case. If you lose your PDFs because your hard drive crashes, it doesn't mean everyone who ever downloaded that PDF loses theirs. Instead, when Sigil is pulled, everyone who had one loses their shiny gold dragon preorder miniature (Sigil relevance!)...

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

Yes, but not all at once for everyone. You can go out and buy another copy of a book (even Dragon magazines which, I know, are harder to come by) because they're still out there. Centralized tools are gone for everyone. When D&D Beyond goes down (and it will), it goes down for everyone. I'm...

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

I’m afraid I shall continue to try to remind people of this ephemeral format and offer tips and suggestions to better preserve their digital holdings. Sorry! We don’t need to worry about most people. We can worry about ourselves and those we can reach. These days it’s easier than ever to keep...

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

I know. I was just making a perpendicular point about how the 4e digital tools ended up and what we should be considering for current digital tools.

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

Feels very similar to the VTT plans, including 3d character builders, in the 4th edition days. For more history on that here's the interview with the 4th edition design team by Jon Peterson: and the 4th edition round table on GenconTV with Peter Atkenson. Both are fantastic histories...

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

When I ran it light always matters. The second it goes out, things start slithering out of the dark and lighting a torch can be hard (DC 12 int or dex at disadvantage). For me it’s a fantastic way to add tension.

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

I think they did that with their own creator license. They really just don’t want people copying and reprinting their core books. If they had particular mechanics locked behind the license somehow, I’d feel different. “To me ORC does it right: if you choose to benefit in Open Gaming, you must...

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

From what I understand, Paizo released all of Pathfinder 2 under ORC. So they didn't hold anything back for themselves while forcing people downstream to release everything. They "ate their own dogfood" as they say. This is at the end of the Pathfinder 2 Core Player guide:
