I disagree that his question amounts to "what do you like". If you focus on the "just plain cool" portion maybe, but the poster's original intent is clear if you look at the entire post. He is focusing on what is new and breaks away from the standard fantasy tropes.

I'm not sure if the original poster is even bothering to read this thread anymore. But I find it sad that while his question was quite specific, many of you choose to ignore it and answer "What fantasy do you like?"

There's a convincing argument presented in the introduction of The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian on why the stories should be read in the order they were written rather than in strictly chronological order.

Heh, wow it's hard to follow that one up but I work in software localization (translation) back and forth between Japanese and English. I do some gaming related work -- English translations of console RPGs developed in Japan.

I marked Japanese, Chinese, and French. Patience and dedication young lad. ;) It's a slog but if you put in the time you will progress. If you can't read kanji then you can't read Japanese.

While it seems to be in fashion on ENWorld to bash Mieville--quite possibly as a knee-jerk reaction to perceived "hype" around his novels--his PSS and The Scar are both very good. I'd recommend checking them out before being influenced by all the negativity. Mieville would be the first though...
