Just how good *IS* level X?

Interesting take, S'mon. I like the way you think.

Justifying high level 'guards', 'pirates', 'soldiers', 'assassins', etc.

Amazon.com: Cinematic Storytelling: The 100 Most Powerful Film Conventions Every Filmmaker Must Know (9781932907056): Jennifer Van Sijll: Books In broad strokes, all the conventions of fiction are essentially the same. This applies to print as much as to film.

The more you are able to prepare the gameworld - the more time spent working on its development - the more immersive the play experience. The DM who knows the most detail about the gameworld is most able to deliver immersive description at the table. The more the players know about the...

    Tiamat, 4e, and (Lawful) Evil

You should just roleplay Tiamat how you think she should be roleplayed. Alignment is just a shorthand so that when you have to roleplay a character designed by somebody else you have a rough idea of how he/she was intended to be played. Bullying is done in many ways and for many reasons. A...

Justifying high level 'guards', 'pirates', 'soldiers', 'assassins', etc.

Ah, this is why we disagree then. I alwasy understood 'cinematic', at least in the context of rpgs, to mean something like 'modelling the conventions of drama more than modelling the conventions of real life'. I don't consider the terms 'immersive' and 'cinematic' to share any direct...

Just how good *IS* level X?

I think according to canon, Gandalf was neither human nor had class levels. Of course, the LotR universe is considerably low-magic compared to D&D settings. I would personally represent Gandalf as an Immortal NPC of level 15+ depending on the level of the PCs.

Just how good *IS* level X?

It seems there's quite a divide in opinions between what constitutes 'low' level, 'mid' level and 'high' level. And as we all know, where there's a difference of opinion, there's interesting-but-polite debate. I'd like to invite you (yes you) to give your opinion as to the relative power...

Justifying high level 'guards', 'pirates', 'soldiers', 'assassins', etc.

I think this paradigm is a throwback to previous editions, where 9th level fighters were called 'Lords' for example. My interpretation of the 4e power curve isn't that, in the transition from 20 levels to 30, they've tacked on 10 more levels of awesome, but rather, that 4e level 30 is...

Gettinig Better At Describing A Scene

Don't try and go into too much detail. Your players all have imaginations. The important thing is your players pick up the function of what you're describing. Don't be scared of telling your players how their characters feel about a locale, or at the very least, the kinds of mood invoked...

Yet you previously said that in your sandbox game there is no distinction between PCs and NPCs. The concept of there being a "need" for such metagame concepts as player characters is intrinsically narrativist.

    What Level is a Guardsman?

I totally agree. Along with concepts like 'good' and 'evil', each group has to decide in advance what a 1st level PC is in the context of the gameworld.

    What Level is a Guardsman?

Every monster in the MM is just an example, though in this instance I think it's a very good example.

    What Level is a Guardsman?

This is why 4e's 30-level spread is a GOOD THING. Gondor's soldiers are definitely level 5 or higher.

    I think Colin's a nice name.

    What Level is a Guardsman?

You wouldn't make them fighters; that would make them elite soldiers. In 4e you would just make them normal soldiers. Minions at higher levels.

    What Level is a Guardsman?

The DMG doesn't say to make them level 10 or any other level. The only place advising guard levels is the Monster Manual. It's up to the DM to assign levels (and monster role) based on the setting and the needs of the adventure. Remember though that a level 10 minion is nowhere near a level...

What Edition to use? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

If I ever played in a game where a situation like this occurred I would punch the DM in the brain. Poetry competitions against Drama Giants aren't the kind of challenge that exists in the kinds of settings I want to play in. They're certainly not the kind of negotiating encounters I have any...

    What Level is a Guardsman?

Who the hell does this? Everybody I've ever seen here talk about their game delivers challenges of varying grades of difficulty, from hard, through easy and onto inconsequential. Are you even talking about the same topic? Ah this old chestnut? It's been addressed a hundred times on these...
