    Enterprise 01-14-04

I wouldn't bet money that the rest of the series goes much beyond this season, at this point. But yeah, the interviews and spoilers seem to indicate the Xindi storyline is just this season (and possibly early next season, if there's a cliffhanger). The temporal cold war is the series-long...

The Shield: Vic Mackey and alignment

I've seen episodes to about midway through season 2. I'd likely call Vic true neutral if he was playing in my D&D campaign - he fluctuates between good and evil actions, and seems to mostly be out for number one. He doesn't strike me as particularly lawful (he certainly pays only lip service to...

LOTR:TT:EE Appendices Disc 3. Discussion of Tolkein

You should probably ask the aforementioned literary snobs who'd prefer you skip LOTR and read only their favourites, like Ulysses. I myself have no problem with people picking and choosing what they like.

Musings on a A Song of Ice and Fire [SPOILERS]...

I think it's more that Martin works to make the character more sympathetic so people want to read those chapters. Jaime's dialogue and actions are actually different from the time he becomes a POV character on - he's portrayed as more intelligent and less capricious than his actions earlier...

LOTR:TT:EE Appendices Disc 3. Discussion of Tolkein

When LOTR was first published, it was panned by many critics who predicted it would bomb, and there was utter shock in many circles when it ended up doing so well. It still gets attacked by critics, but now because it's popular. Literary snobs would prefer everyone plow through something like...

    Dnd flavoured 'Clerics'.

I'd say the most "cleric-like" of the AU casters is the Witch: Wisdom as casting stat, not awful in HtH, access to themed special abilities. Change the background a bit (so for example a wind witch is actually a devotee of a wind god, etc.) and you can use them with powers as is. The other...

    Stripping alignment out of D&D

Well, mechanically it's simple, but the effects are kind of far-ranging and will vary from game to game. When you get rid of all the spells with effects based on alignment, clerics lose some pretty useful high level spells. Whether that's a big balance problem of course depends on how often your...

Has anyone used AU for RTTTOEE?

There's a bunch of room for roleplaying in the adventure if the player and DM are so inclined. It does take a fair amount of familiarity with the material to be able to run those sorts of sessions, though, running it straight out of the book will be more of a hack-and-slash experience.

My party has no healing magic!

Hmm, problem might be in translation of perceptions - Magisters have more than a bit of healing by AU standards. If Tak keeps a couple of wands (or equivalent) of Battle Healing handy, your group should do OK.

    How to do a homebrew?

Generally what I do is make up a full booklet with the full description and rules for the races/classes/whatever I'm allowing, then make up a couple of small handouts for the players. My small handout for the races would be a chart with the stat adjustments and a notes column with other changes...

    Elves are Broken :p

I don't think this holds true historically; a solo hunter is more likely to be hunting critters along the lines of rabbits. Hunters today go after relatively big game, but that's because they have considerably better equipment and they're hunting for trophies or enjoyment rather than survival...

    Using Detect Evil/Good

Since I'm not responsible for WOTC's labelling choices on their tables, I don't know. Expecting me to know is a bit like me expecting you to know why the text of the spell says it detects "evil creatures" instead of "some evil creatures and some neutral creatures as shown in the table below". I...

Please bring back Plots & Places Forum (merged)

Maybe, but as somebody who checks the boards a couple of times a day I'm sure I miss most of them. One of the attractions of Plots and Places was the very low churn rate - a DM could post something, get responses over a couple of days, maybe find an old post still on the first page that had some...

    Alternate (low) magic systems

I'd be tempted to: - switch to non-casting Bards, Paladins and Rangers - dump the Sorcerer, Wizard, Cleric, Druid - use the Acolyte and Mage (or Arcanist) advanced classes from d20 Modern If the setting demands it, create a Druidic class based on the Acolyte, fiddle with the arcane class(es)...

    Using Detect Evil/Good

That's one interpretation, but certainly not the only one. Equally valid: it indicates that if an undead critter is of evil alignment (and thus detects as evil), it has a separate line on the chart to consult for aura power.

    Survivor, 12/11 (spoilers)

Apparently, they wrapped it up this week, so it should be in production now. I imagine the hype fest will start up in January, when TV time is a bit cheaper.

    How "Human-centric" is your campaign/setting?

My current D&D campaign is human-centric overall, but the PCs are mostly operating in an area dominated by elves, dwarves, and orcs. My current AU campaign is centered more around giants and faen. My next D&D homebrew I'm heading towards a more traditionally humanocentric game, but it's in...

    Survivor, 12/11 (spoilers)

Hmm, I dunno about that. Sandra vs. Darrah is probably the closest possible final, which is why I think we won't see it ;) . If Darrah makes the final three, I don't think the final two will be Sandra/Darrah. The way the jury looks right now, Sandra and Darrah each have two lock votes...

Where do you center spell effects on your grid?

My group uses a circular template. We center it on the target critter, and have it affect every mini with at least half a square's worth of base under the template. I don't really worry that much about targeting the spell so it just misses the allies, any more than I worry about a raging...

    Using Detect Evil/Good

Actually, the wording is pretty clear - 3.5 PHB, pg 30: Combine the wording with the example, and it's clear that you can have neutral clerics of most good and evil gods, just not the neutral good and neutral evil ones. Lawful Neutral cleric of Heironeus (or Hextor)? That's fine. Neutral...
