The Battle of 5 Armies (er...editions)!

Wouldn't it be better to include 4E as an option so everyone can vote?

    D&D 4E Two-on-Two 4e Brawl

Making a power an "at will" power - like +4 to hit - is an easy way of clearly saying you can't use it in combination with other various powers and abilities. So it sets up a nice framework of "You can get +4 to hit OR you can do this other thing), and it leaves more room in the rules for other...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

Comparisons of D&D to MMA competitions is pointless. 1. D&D is not trying to simulate reality, its trying to create a balanced combat system. 2. An MMA competition and an actual to-the-death fight are two very different situations. Acceptable tactics and techniques in one are completely...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

I'm only too happy to have trip be limited in availability and prevalence as a combat action. Constant tripping instead of attacking is lame IMO.

Trimming the Fat: Three Ability Scores

A high intelligence makes you more capable of exploiting cover, positioning, and timing effectively.

D&D 3.x 4E Simulationism: Did 3.5E Really Do That Good of a Job?

You obviously haven't been to some of the gentleman's clubs I have!

Wizard Spells 10-16 Two Page Spread

I'm thinking this is only a small fraction of the spells available. I think there will be plenty more to choose from as you go up in level, but you can only know a relatively small number of them. . . kinda like a sorcerer today.

What I like and don't like

I suspect they will add flying at a later date. Personally I think its great if flying has been severely restricted. In a quasi-medevil setting, the ability to fly is a super-weapon. PC flight has always been bad for the game before because it dramatically nerfs some encounters, renders many...

Can anyone post a larger, clearer version of the character sheets?

They're extremely small in the photohost site. . . and blowing them up in picture viewer makes them blurry. Did anybody going to this get good copies they could post?

    A Question of Character...

This is a false dillemma. 3.x has been out for years and has a MOUNTAIN of supplements. There is no doubt in my mind that five years from now when there is a mountain of 4th edition supplements, you will be able to play any type of character you can think of and then some. To expect the core...

Counting the Cost: Encounter Power/Sneak Attack Synergy

I think assumption #2 just makes the question irrelevant. We know that in the basic sneak attack rules the weach choice on what you can sneak attack with is highly restricted. Given that flavor restriction, I find it unlikely that they'll come out with a feat to break it.

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

I for one welcome our new focused core class overlords! It looks as though in 4E, all the classes are going to have a tighter focus to them. In previous editions of the game, the six or seven TRULY core classes were such generalists, that you could run pretty much any archetype with them...

    D&D 4E 4E Combat Rounds and Perception

I'm greatly looking forward to the increased pace of combat in 4th edition. As has been discussed elsewhere, its not the number of rounds that is important. Its not even really the total clock time of the combat that is problematic. Its the dead time for individual players during combat...

    Rogues get 5/level

I think the 6hp/level is too low. I agree with some of the others arrays that are predicting more like 8hp/level for you D10 classes. Might even see 10/level for the barbarians when they come out!

    The Inverse Trek Law?

Too bad a lot of people already love 4E and think it promises to be the best edition yet. . . thereby invalidating your hypothesis.

Design Leadership from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th

I was almost the lead designer for 4th edition. . . Back when 3E was coming out, I wrote a letter to Dragon explaining how a lot of the 3E rules were very close to house rules I implemented in my own game and how they could have saved themselves a lot of time and money just having me provide...

Healing Surges: 6 + Constitution modifier

I'm thinking its uses per day. I'm also thinking that the amount of HPs healed by each surge will be something like Con Score + 1/2 level.

    Rename Thievery to Roguery

I like "thievery." "Roguery" implies to me a Don Giovanni type character, running around sleeping with chicks and then ditching them. Not necessarily a bad skill to develop in your character, but not what they were going for I think.

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

Just an observation. . . Looks like the 1st level hit points are 2 1/2x the per level hit points. So if we say a fighter gets between 8 and 10 hit points per level, they will have between 20 and 25 HP plus Con score at 1st level. That's a lot of HPs for a 1st level character. . . as...

PHB classes -- why does it matter which ones are included?

I was going to post, but I see you've already very eloquently stated the situation.
