Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

I think it's probably more fun for most players to have a number of different modifiers that don't add up to exactly what the monsters get, than to just add +level and be done with it. I think the "mark" you're aiming to hit is one of several different design goals that WotC set out at the start...

Why do the PCs go to the Moathouse?

Well for one thing, there's a giant crayfish right on the cover of the module, and them's good eatin'! Secondly, our party had a dumb Paladin who wouldn't let us off the villagers (why the heck do they stat them up, then???) for their stuff, so we had to go hang around in the moathouse until he...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

I think that's the root of it, I just don't think it qualifies as a flaw. I think an even progression, where PC attacks always scaled at exactly the same rate as monster defenses would be boring. I also think that if WotC produced Expertise feats as a "fix", then the fact that it's an option...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

Isn't Expertise the same thing, tho? If you can get a +1/+2/+3 attack bonus, then you must get it? The "sweet spot" in 3.x wasn't a single point, or a percentage to-hit, it was a spread of levels. I don't think simply getting PC bonuses equal to monster bonuses is the point, or else we wouldn't...

Fantasy RPGs that do things... different?

Burning Wheel is pure awesome, but it requires quite a lot of "buy-in" on the part of both the players and the GM. I don't know if I can explain that better without going on for like 400 pages... Personally I think I figured out a lot about what you need to run a successful game of Burning Wheel...

    Winning races:tiefling is up

Replacing a Racial Encounter power with a Racial Daily seems like opening a can of worms. The power is cool and flavorful, but it's going to matter a whole heck of a lot how many encounters you're packing into a "day".

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

I've been thinking about this myself, and I'm largely with you on this one. First of all, yes it matters. If it didn't you wouldn't see so many threads about it. Expertise is the cream of the crop in feats, it's the first non-concept-oriented feat I'll take, pretty much every character I build...

    Is the math off?

Isn't game-balance subjective, though? IME it sure seems to be: there are players and groups that prefer much more (or less) of a challenge than others do.

    Determining Ability Scores

I stand corrected. I really had assumed that the point-buy system was the default system, but it's not even method I.

    Is the math off?

Personally I do not see adding feats as the same as assuming that all characters will take them. These feats suggest more to me that WotC saw some potential merit in complaints about The Math and wanted to offer something for those players / DMs who thought it needed fixing. IMO it's easier for...

    Is the math off?

Well, remember that the monsters have it better both ways; they are ~20% more likely to hit as well as ~20% less likely to be hit. And the more severe conditions that become more prevalent at higher levels like stunned mean that a hit is often much worse than just the damage dealt. Even given...

    Humans throughout editions, throughout games

This, along with the ability score requirements for various sub-classes led to one of two PoVs, IME: One was "roll well or go home", the other was to shrug and accept that many characters would have lower ability scores and few would qualify for Paladin, Ranger, etc. Personally, under Method I...

    Determining Ability Scores

One of the things that gets me kind of excited when thinking about old-school gaming is "3d6 in order" ability scores, but then again I mostly DM'ed. Now, I didn't really use straight 3d6 in order much, in AD&D we usually had 8-12 players start, each with three characters, and then pared that...

    Humans throughout editions, throughout games

lol... We certainly didn't see tons of sub-class characters, so that makes sense.

    Targeted Assault: Errata / Consensus?

Awesome, thanx. I had heard rumblings to this effect, but had kind of ignored them because no-one seemed to be providing an actual quote or link... :uhoh: Guess it doesn't always pay to be skeptical of the internets, after all. :)

Dragon 376 - MM3 Playtest: The Volcanic Dragon

Well I don't see why you can't still use the Young Volcanic Dragon in a level 9 encounter. Add two Flame Snakes, a Magma Strider, and some lava hazards and you have a nice, thematic, and probably tough encounter for (unprepared) level 9 PCs!

    Humans throughout editions, throughout games

I know I saw groups where no player would ever bother playing a "switch-class" Human, but there where also others where it was pretty common, and generally considered superior to multi-classing as a demi-human. The groups I primarily played with mostly had individual human characters as...

    Targeted Assault: Errata / Consensus?

Concerning the feat Targeted Assault, from Primal Power: So, when I first read the feat, I kind of assumed it was a case of a typo in the rules text, and the table was correct. Obviously, this is the opposite of the standing rule that rules text takes precedence over table entries; and as I've...

Fighter multi-class into Barbarian - Question

I think, with two leaders and another defender you should be ok if you think about what you're swapping out. Fighters can already put out pretty good damage; two-hander vs. sword & board you lose out on AC and a few nice powers, but there's certainly good stuff still available. Berserker's Fury...

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

I wanted to discuss this, but unfortunately neither of the Avenger Handbooks that I can currently find seem to be complete enough to actually have a powers section at the moment... =/ I blame the WotC boards reorganization / facelift... Well, IMO, that's not what the Handbooks are. I may...
