How many levels does D&D need?

Well, although I've never played much past level 10 (if at all), I like the idea that the game goes to level 20. My favorite d20 game of all, Omega World, only went to level 10; and one of the only innovations I really liked about Conan OGL was that the hit points basically stopped after level...

Can we go back to smaller books?

It's the ease of use of Savage Worlds that appeals to me. I don't need a super-detailed campaign world. What I need is a concise set of rules to play the game and tell the story. And, I think that is what this thread is about for D&D, too. When the rules get so massive, it gets in the way of...

How many levels does D&D need?

It needs 20 levels to be D&D, but only about 10 for me to actually use it.

10 Necromancer Games Adventures: Which Ones Should I Get?

Other: "The Vault of Larin Karr" because it is a good, fleshed out little sandbox of an adventure. I wish I could get my group back to it.

Can we go back to smaller books?

The smaller book is one of the reasons I really like Savage Worlds. The D&D Miniatures Handbook had a great little campaign section that presents a very simplified version of the game, which I hope to use one day for an RPG-style DnD minis campaign.

If WotC decided to revitalize and support AD&D, would you play/buy it?

Nope. I sold off my boxes of AD&D stuff. I played the mess out of it and really enjoyed it. But, there's no going back for me.

I'd like to see it, too.

    Rifts d20 ideas

When I converted from Rifts to d20, I first used DragonStar and then Omega World. I really liked Omega World for the story that I was trying to tell, but I like limited magic (there were no magic-using PCs). So, if you limit the players' options, then it is much easier for you to run. If you...

What are you playing that is NOT D&D?

Playing Relams of Cthulhu for Savage Worlds. Would like to play Systems Failure, Star Wars Revised d20 or Deadlands Hell on Earth. All these games have been "on hold" for some time. Planning on running Necropolis for Savage Worlds, a semi-annual game. Would like to run Rifts Machinations...

Mongoose Publishing d20/OGL: Best Books? (Updated: Sept/2012)

Judge Dredd d20 is a great one to me. It was the first time that I really saw the d20 system (3e) used well for a completely different genre. I still like the idea of limited classes (judge or citizen) with the character development coming from skill & feat choices. Just a nicely done game...

4e increased my DM prep time...

Go back to 3e. Yeah, my prep time decreased about 90% switching from d20 to Savage Worlds. The moral of the story is: use what is easy & fun for you.

How Do You Run a Doppleganger?

Get a player to do it. In an older edition game, I had a player of a greater dopplegamger wipe out almost the entire party by taking a victim and then adding that player and character to the deception. One fell after another. It was all the players. It was dark, but memorable.

Recommend Me Some Diabolically Appropriate Music

The scariest music I ever used for a game was the soundtrack to [B]Predator 2[B]. It even startled me in one moment.

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

Thinking about the original post (and admitting that I have not read this entire thread), I realize that for me what's at stake with a particular edition (or game) is my stake in the hobby. The best way I can explain it is with examples. When I started gaming, I was in elementary school. I...

    Mixed Setting Or Pure?

I've had better luck with games in more pure settings. For example, I thought a 3.0 Shackled City game with jedi (Star Wars), judges (Dredd) and mutants (Omega World) would be awesome. Great in theory. Not so good in application. So, the genre mixing is something I really don't do anymore...

    How does Savage Worlds play?

Savage Worlds plays like a dream. When I ran it in lieu of 3.0/3.5, my prep time decreased about 90%. I don't think it will ever really supplant D&D for fantasy for me, d20 for some other types of games (Star Wars & Omega World) or even some really genre-specific games where the rules are part...

for d20 Lovers, what in your opinion would be an evolutionary step in d20 games?

My next evolution will be to make d20 much simpler. For d20 D&D, I plan to use the D&D minis (DDM) stats for the minis that I have. If I start a new campaign, I would love to do it as DDM skirmish campaign in which the players pick a mini to be their character and then advance using the very...

    scoop: 4e gamma world

I'm still interested in seeing it. I've had a lot of fun with Gamma World over the years. My favorite iterations used the Omega Worlds rules with earlier modules: played Legion of Gold and ran the Alternity adventures with Omega World rules. So, I'm looking forward to seeing if WOTC can do...
