    D&D 5E (2014) Two things I like about D&DNext

As of the last playtest, all spell casters work their magic as the Spirit Shaman in 3.5 used to.

    D&D 5E (2014) Two things I like about D&DNext

It's the devs term for keeping the bonuses to rolls in a narrow range. While the fighter in 3.x got +20 to attack rolls at level 20, the next fighter has +5. The reason is to make monsters viable for a larger amount of levels. 1. Everyone's a Spirit Shaman. 2. Dispel Magic.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L 1/7/2013 The Many Worlds of D&D

I don't like it. I don't see the need for a geometry or structure of planes. Plane is to me "interesting place, get there via portal". I don't need inner or outer planes, planes adjacent to one another or anything like that.

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

I guess a Knight fighter does not have to be chivalrous. It's a fighter born to warrior nobility as opposed to peasentry.

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

It would be enough, if they spelled out, what the oath means. "Cavalier: Help the innocent, right wrongs, keep your word". Done. This is actually independent of alignment. Even an evil person can act like that. It would probably be devilish about keeping the word and cruel in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should Rituals Have a Cost?

They do require components. It just isn't clear, how a character runs out of components. Instead of using money, I'd rather roll a d10. If the result isn't higher than the ritual's level, the character does not have the necessary components to do it again.

    D&D 5E (2014) skill challenges

Apparently, they do not try to make a single system for skill challenges, but present several subsystems for various occasions, like the Exploration and Travelling rules. Those in some ways like a very skill challenge for these specific tasks. There were no hints about rules for chases, yet.

    The last question doesn't work.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Should Be Core

I'd answer yes and no. I want the ability to make my character good at something. If my character is an expert in demonology, I want my demonology to be better than other types of knowledge. If my character won the Pelorian games in swimming, I want my character to be good at swimming. That...

    D&D 5E (2014) New Wandering Monsters - Hulking Out

Grey render I dig. The "bonds with creature" is always interesting. The village heroes at one time were a few kids with their render. They called it Grey or Render, because it was grey and rent. To be fair, the naming of many real world creatures isn't any different: Sloth, Aardvark (Earth pig)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Joke Material Components

I was always very partial to throwing tarts for Laughter. Most of the time though, we never talked about material components. I don't think the game even needs to list any components, if at the same time the rules assume that you have a little bag containing any components, unless it is taken...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Living Traps

Oh, yeah. Cloakers. Sorry. I was confused, as the article mentioned grey bellies and manta-like appearance. Which fits Cloakers as well. So a dimorophism or metamorphosis between Cloakers and Lurkers would be more appropriate, it seems.

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Living Traps

I think that article missed the most important part: Culture. Lurkers are intelligent. According to Forgotten Realms: Underdark they even have their own town in the underdark. And they keep Darkmantles as pets. As an aberrant species with society, as opposed to solitary beholders and mostly...

D&D 5E (2014) We have a Legends and Lore this week

Apparently our ancestors were running at 50% HP all the time. While that is not the point of the rule - real world considerations never are - the life expectancy of our ancestors tended to be lower, indeed. With their new set-up first level is an Apprentice. Apprentices are probably not...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5/30 Q&A: Charm, Chases, and Combat Free

To make fleeing more interesting, change the Hustle action so that it involves a STR check and a variable amount of movement.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5/30 Q&A: Charm, Chases, and Combat Free

According the rules you linked, a chase ends when some party is fatigued or at 0 HP, so there is little opportunity to have a combat afterwards. The other way is interesting: How do I trigger chase, when I want to leave combat? The rules also miss a passage on hiding.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5/30 Q&A: Charm, Chases, and Combat Free

That's not what they are saying. They talk about "the players and the Dungeon Master", that is the entirety of the gaming group as a collective, not its individual members.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5/30 Q&A: Charm, Chases, and Combat Free

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters- Bird People

Combat is probably the easiest thing to balance, for example: Clumsy Fight: While you are conscious and not paralysed or similarly disabled, you do not fall. During your turn you descend 30 ft., unless you take the Fly action. If you take the Fly action, you can keep your altitude or climb 30...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills as mundane Spells

They require a different approach to the narrative. D&D usually assumes that everything known to the characters is known to the players (not necessarily the other way round). Abilities like these would assume that the character had acted off-stage - for example in recruiting those warriors. That...
