How many people have you played D&D with?

I voted the 101+ I've been playing since 1974. In my early times, I was playing in 2-3 different campaigns a week. I've run an 'open' table game for most of that time and since most of my players are college/univerity students, there is a high turn over of players as students graduate and...

Need stats for a goat...what ought I use?

Just a ordinary, run of the mill goat? Not a demon goat from hell sort of thing. If the former, the goat is about the size of a large breed dog. Use the dog stats and take away the bite attack and scent ability and substitute a 1d4+str slam (headbutt). That should be close enough.

how to do mass/army battle quick?

Play out the battle concerning her location and any foes and allies in the immediate area. Handwave the rest of the battle with descriptions of how the battle is unfolding. Make it up with a eye to making the battle dramatic and cinematic. Her fate becomes her small forces fate. If she does...

I know we have "Rules Lawyers", but what

Send him the rules (cut and paste out of the SRD) concerning SR and the Web spell. Highlight the salient points supporting your argument in 30 pt font. :] Oh, right....you don't want to be snarky. Ignore me. (but it would be what I would do :p )

Best features in Pen and Paper VS. CRPG?

Complete freedom of choice. In computer RPGs, you can only do what the program allows. Very severe limitations on being able to do things (limitations of programming) and express your character in whatever fashion (again, limitations of programming) So, if you are playing NWN, say one of the...

I know we have "Rules Lawyers", but what

I call 'Shennigans' on any 'out of the arse' rules (it is how I refer to baffling rule changes that come up in mid-game). Basically, you have politely done that and got called a rules lawyer. Respond by stating that you are not trying to be a rules nazi but the house rule was not revealed to...

The Wii May Be the Bane of Roleplaying

If you are asking the question after your experience with a Wii, then I submit to you that you were probably were not deeply into tabletop RPGs in the first place. As other posters have pointed out, they are two different types of entertainment and two different 'experiences'. Neither...

    How to recruit quality GMs?

I've DMed a few cons in the past. QA issues can be done by observing the DMs run short 'test' sessions. Just by observing, you can in a short time get a feel about how rules savvy the DM is, how he operates his table and what sort of presence he projects. As for quality DMs that are willing...

Crypt of Damnation: help? (spoilers) NOW WITH LINK!

I haven't played it but going over it, it is clear that some info is missing from the map - mainly, the location of the trap trigger. So, my interpretation is as follows: * Where is Damnation at initially? It is not given so it is for the DM to choose. I would think a good choice would be...

    Dice spinning

I don't care about the causes of dice spinning but I have curbed it somewhat with a simple rule (I am the DM) If the dice crosses to my side of the table due to being spun, its 'mine'. :] Of course, I thank them for my contribution to my dice collection. Once a couple of dice found a new...

    Clueless DM

The problem is both a DM and player problem. The DM for failing to properly manage his campaign and be fair and equitable to all players, and a few problem players whose idea of fun is at the expense of the rest of the other players. Well, you bought your concerns to the DM and basically got...

Rapid-fire Crossbow from "Van Helsing" movie

My technobabble explaination would fit in well for Eberron - basically, the crossbow is self loading, auto cocking repeating crossbow in which the gas cannister contains a 'bound' air elemental to produce the air pressure to active the loading system. The prod still fires the crossbow.

The Ruins of Undermountain - your experiences?

Our group enjoyed. I am not averse to creating my own encounter areas so the large tracks of empty rooms didn't bother me. My Undermountain campaign was fun for everyone and encouraged me to be zany in designing encounters. Members of our group still remember to this day the time they met and...

Rapid-fire Crossbow from "Van Helsing" movie

My impression of the weapon was that the gas was used to 'c.o.c.k.' the weapon, not propel the bolt. Still, even if possible to engineer, the gas canister in the stock of the weapon would only have enough gas to 'cycle' the action a few times before pressure was too low to c.o.c.k. the...

    Seeking Advice on Modules

You should look at the Adventure Path (from Dungeon magazine), as any of them are definately worth running. Each Adventure Path takes the party from 1st to 20th level. All have mixtures of dungeon crawls, outdoor adventures, intrigue elements and possible outer plane adventuring. All have...

Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil Run Time?

Our group did it in 6-7 months, playing faithfully 5-6 hours each week. Several things contributed to the speed of how fast we did it. First, our group is very focused. We tend to cut to the quick when things start to drag and we tend to be very quick in the planning and discussion. We...

Character Death - what do you do?

Replacement characters come in at the level of the lowest level surviving party member and with just enough XP to qualify for that level. Usually, this means the new character comes in at the same level as the rest of the party. I don't punish the character by making the character come in at a...

    Way too much loot?

Your problem is more than a wealth issue. I suspect, based on what you have stated, that your expectations for what is a good game and what the rest of your group considers a good game is different. Frank discussion might help, if the DM is open to a dialogue. Maybe something can be hammered...
