The Great Glut of Gaming Guides at "Go away" prices...

I don't get this "just sit on it until it sells for MSRP" stuff. Say I'm a store owner and I buy four copies of a $40 title for 75% of MSRP from my distributor, for a cost of $120. I sell two copies at MSRP for a total of $80, I still loose $40 if those two copies never sell. But if I sell...

The Great Glut of Gaming Guides at "Go away" prices...

Books and Secondary Market Half-Price Books and some online retailers work the secondary market. After a book has been in the market for four to six months, the publisher sends the retailer a title list of books that can be returned for credit. This allows the retailer to keep capital they...

    Attn: Gamers in Austin!

Too bad I can't have my local HPB send a request down there to have all those copies transferred up here! :p I had a couple of opportunities a couple of years ago when the main Dallas store got in almost every 1E module and several hundred copies of Dragon going back to the late 1970s. THere...

Way to get girls (?!): the new column for the new Dragon.

Well considering British people call cookies "biscuits", there's always confusion when it comes to baked goods. A biscuit is a roll and used either in breakfast sandwiches or smothered in white gravy. I thought her writing is reminiscent of Douglas Coupland, author of "Generation X"...

One (Awesome) Gamer's Perspective: My Hobby is Gaming

I'm a gamer who plays D&D because that seems to be one of the few games in town. I run it and spend money on it because I have a group of players I like and I want them (and myself) to have a good time. I'd rather run other games, and maybe after a time I'll get to do that with my group.

    "Hey look, a distraction!"

My problem with getting side tracked is feeling that as a group we didn't get far in the adventure when the night is over. We play two 4 hour sessions a month, and we've stretched out the same dungeon crawl for the three months now.

How did you teach your kid to play D&D?

I'm still trying to teach my wife (of 14 years) how to play! :p With my kids (7 & 10) I'm not pushing it at all. My older daughter is really into Pokemon and Animal Crossing for the DS. My son loves DDMs and plays Star Wars minis and Attactix with dad, but doesn't have the patience for RPGs...

Why can't WotC break the mass market barrier?

I saw the basic set at Toys R Us two weekends ago. All the Barnes and Nobles in our area carry a fairly diverse range of WoTC books. I see the problem of general merchandise stores carrying D&D is that outside the basic set, there really isn't anything else they want to carry. They could...

    Rules Compendium excerpt

I gotta say that as 4E looms larger, I'm getting even happier with all the variation that 3.5 has given us over the past several years. I'm looking forward to buying the Rules Compendium.

I wish all publishers would go systemless.

Freeport hasn't gone entirely systemless as Green Ronin also released a True20 rules version. Systemless books are weak in that they don't provide the crunch that supports the fluff. For example, taint and honor rules that support the notion of a society where corruption and honor are...

    DVD Recorders

A co-worker of mine bought a DVR/DVD writer a couple of years ago and says it works great. I found one like it on Amazon - Pioneer DVR-531HS.

    Child with a Gun

Erm, I think the OPs criticism is not that the child had a gun, but had it in a restaurant. In this day and age if I saw you carrying a weapon in public and it wasn't to your car, house, shooting range or into the woods, you'd bet I'd call the cops. I'd much rather have you explaining your...

    Pesky Low-Light Vision Question

[Doh! I intended this to go in the D&D Rules section. Could a board admin move it over there?] I've read through several threads on low-light vision rules but still need further clarification. In my current game my players have been adventuring in a pyramid and are preparing to enter into a...

Do you Run Published Adventures As Is?

The published adventure must inspire me if I'm ever going to run it, so I'll leave most of the story alone. Where I adjust is to increase or decrease the encounters to better match the party, and make the monster ecology a little more consistent. Right now I'm nearing the end of running B4...

    Child with a Gun

A very young Ron Howard (Opie) as I recall. Some adults get the concept while others are oblivious. For our family we have one Star Wars blaster, one pirate gun, one bright orange 9MM, and an assortment of clear plastic water guns. One big rule is they don't go in the car, and if they do...

    Con assistance needed ASAP

If you can't push back to the original size, ditch the subplots and put them into a killer dungeon crawl. Your players will get more participation with combat-intensive game than waiting for the more social characters to parlez with the NPCs looking for clues. Is there a first edition module...
