Why I don't GM by the nose

Except that it's a power relationship. No matter how much people argue otherwise and no matter how true the the GM has all the power at the table. Right up until the minute the players leave the table, that is. Since the GM has the power, it's his problem and responsibility to take the lead in...

What kind of puzzles do you give your players?

Typically, I don't. Very simple puzzles, to the point I really wouldn't call them puzzles, like lining up carvings or word games can work. Riddles usually don't, and frankly most logic puzzles are out. Part of this is I have a computer programmer and logician at one of my tables. He's seen all...

Why I don't GM by the nose

Or, you know, like in a D&D game. Been that way since Castle Greyhawk. Standard of the hobby, really. Actually, you're adding to what the OP said. fireinthedust never said he had nothing in mind about the statue et al. In fact, pretty much every GM I've ever played with or heard about would...

How much $ per month do you spend on Gaming?

I choose the $26 - $50 bracket, but that's the average. Some months it's less because it's a slow month on my Paizo subs, sometimes it's more because it's a heavy month on the subs or something came out from Post Human or Crafty. Next month will be higher as I'm picking the hard copies of some...

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

I meant over to the left, under your nickname.

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

Well, if you gave an actual location... ;) Then you'll need to look around. Sadly ADV (who published the DVDs of Robotech, Robotech Remastered, and the dub of Macross) is out of business. When you go looking, the Macross dubs specifically do not say Robotech on them.

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross holds up amazingly well (even with the infamously bad animation in the AnimeFriend and Star Pro animated parts) almost twenty years later. Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA don't hold up nearly as well. If you're going to...

Why I don't GM by the nose

A better question isn't how long it took, but is did everyone have fun? If everyone had fun for those three sessions, the pacing (as it relates to the topic at hand) was fine.

Why I don't GM by the nose

Yes, the GM always controls the pace. No, the GM always controls the pace. Only if the GM is lazy. If the players do something, awesome. If they don't it's the GM's job to keep the game moving. Otherwise everyone at the table is wasting time. The GM is the only person at the table who...

Why I don't GM by the nose

No, it's called adjudicating. It's one of the primary responsibilities at the table. Even f you're playing in a plotless litterbox, it's still the GM's responsibility. Why? Because the players have no real control over pacing. The GM controls the world, so he controls the pace. If the players...

Why I don't GM by the nose

If the players sit around, not knowing what to do (rather then being jerks by refusing to do anything) and the GM lets the drag the game to a screeching halt rather then having something kick in the door or whatever, the GM has failed. Creating hooks is not the player's job, it's the GMs. Coming...

    3.5 Brainstorming: Fantasy sport?

Interestingly, The Game from The Salute of the Jugger/Blood of Heroes has become a real sport, Jugger.

Why I don't GM by the nose

While I own that one, I haven't done more the skim through the player's guide and first volume. I understand there's a number of jumps between volumes that flat out don't make sense. Now, one aspect of playing in a published module of any sort is accepting that it's a printed module and that...

    The R in rpg

I expect nothing less from the world's greatest consulting criminal.

Why I don't GM by the nose

So that sounds like the GM failed at running the AP. It also sounds like the table had other major issues. Without knowing which one it's hard to judge the quality of the hooks. The ones I've read tended to have some decent subplots within the adventure, and a lot of things for a GM to flesh out...

    The R in rpg

I'm not even sure what the question is asking. If rollplaying means combat and roleplaying means non-combat, then a mix. If rollplaying means use of dice and mechanics (including rolling social skills) and roleplaying means forced play acting and playing GM May I and Twenty Questions, then...

Why I don't GM by the nose

Because, as I said, if the players are at a loss for what to do, the GM has either failed to give them things to do (hooks) or failed to seize the initiative (kick in the door) when they flounder.
  19. Krensky

Why I don't GM by the nose

Not really. It's a GM failure. The GM hasn't presented enough hooks, or he's presented the wrong hooks, or he's presented too many hooks inducing option paralysis. Either way, the GM's either not doing their job, or they're doing it wrong. You're repeating what I said here. This is pretty...

Why I don't GM by the nose

Sure. Not engaging with the game. Refusing to follow the conceits of the campaign. Ignoring the game until it comes time to do what ever their thing is. Generally being an ass. Not having fun and not talking to the rest of the group.
