Not to mention Unknown Armies. That's definitely an out there game.

Has the 3.x Era Helped or Hurt the Development of Good DM's?

I disagree that Third Edition put shackles on excellent DMs. I think all it did was add a little time into their learning curve, and give them a new bar to rise to. Once they got past that, they got even better. What you may have seen was a bit of burnout though, with folks no longer interested...

    Bait & Switch

On a sidenote, I have found that a bait and switch that lets the players do cool things works. I once started a GURPS campaign where the players were told that they would be FBI agents, kind of like Mulder and Scully with a few extra PCs. They started off investigating a murder in a small town...

    Bait & Switch

I think altering the character without consent isn't good. (Now, a group full of method actors and heavy deep-immersion roleplayers might love it. Those groups aren't common.) I think you'd be right to address your concerns to your GM. Are you going to get more out of this than your old build...

D&D 4E 4e vs. Paizo: Mommy, Daddy, please stop fighting!

Are you guys the Dire Sharks or the Fiendish Jets?

D&D 4E 4e vs. Paizo: Mommy, Daddy, please stop fighting!

Kvantum - good story there guy. I like it because it summarizes the whole apparent (and yet unnecessary) divide very well. Say, isn't this a little snide (without, I think, your intending it to be)? This sort of subtle sniping - as in "You 4E players get off my lawn, ya punks!" - done by...

    Retro-gaming

Thank you for mentioning Hackmaster! That really is a retro-inspired game. One minor quibble with this point. Pathfinder is a game that tries to polish up 3.5 with some new gaming technology, without going as far as 4th Edition. By intent, it's not "retro".

The Stupidest Lawsuit Ever...against WoTC and Gary Gygax

Indeed. A one-paragraph complaint is sad to start with. This appears to be a person who has mental illness. I don't think mocking him or even calling attention to him will help him. He's been declared a vexatious litigant by the courts and everything is dismissed. They're aware that he's not...

Tell me of your best Mook Fights!

What was fun? What did you do? What mooks did you throw against the PCs? Any interesting terrain? How did you make it a challenge? Or was it just a big slaughter-fest for the PCs to enjoy?

    Kingdoms of Kalamar

I play in a Kalamar game now. The setting is nicely detailed, with excellent maps. They really did a lot of the gruntwork for the DM. Magic seems almost an afterthought in Kalamar. It exists without consequences or developments on top of a pseudo-medieval society. That society has lots of...

Tell me about "Any RPG" from before 1990!

Champions - ah, there's a fun superhero game. Hexes rule the battlemap. Stats are calculated based on points - the same as how you buy your powers. Essentially, everything has a cost, including skill ranks. I don't really think that there was a big downside except that every edition made it more...

Experience with Collected Book of Experimental Might?

We liked it when we tried it! Good stuff. We didn't bring it into the current campaign because the DM didn't feel like retooling everything, but it really made sense.

    Combust Spell ?

I would think that any round a person is on fire, it's reasonable to take a move action to put yourself out. That's it. No save. Note that magic cloaks get far better saves than non-magic equipment. Personally, I would change this to 1d6 instead of 1d8. Note that as a single target spell...

    Kobold Quarterly and 4e

I guess you guys have issues with each other! Regardless of personal issues, I think it's a fair point. If 4E content goes up, there's less Pathfinder content and 3.5 content. I'm a fan of the latter two, even though I'm not complaining about the 4E articles and increasing content.

Help for a non-tactically minded GM?

Erm. Like most I absorb these by observing my tactically superior players or by posting about stuff on message boards! That said, try the Wizards Archives here. You might try reading through D&D Fight Club, Elite Opponents, Rules of the Game, and especially Tactics and Tips! Then come back and...
