    Melee: No way out?

The fighter's mark from Combat Challenge gives an interrupt attack, but it's *not* an OA, so Combat Superiority doesn't apply. However, if you want to take OAs when the enemy shifts & therefore apply Combat Superiority, there are a couple ways to do it. For example, multiclass into cleric and...

    Biggest 4E PHB complaint...

My biggest complaint is that the spear--the regular, one handed spear--does not have a range increment. In other words, you can't throw it. Lame! Caveat: you *could* throw it as an improvised ranged weapon, but you wouldn't get a proficiency bonus, and if it was magic it wouldn't automatically...

Can D&D be played without all the mini rules?

You only *need* rules for combat. Everything else, you can role-play. Rules for height, rules for weight, rules for age and crafting and so on just get in the way and restrict the imagination. In my opinion 4E is the easiest system to roleplay since OD&D. And the combat system is vastly better.

Can D&D be played without all the mini rules?

You *could* play without minis, but it'd be difficult. A lot of the secondary effects of powers give movement or deny movement to the enemy. Conditions like "slow", 'prone", and "immobilize" become less important (or completely irrelevant). Flanking and reach lose importance. Opportunity attacks...

Honestly, if WoTC didn't create it would 4e be D&D?

Well, of course. "D&D" is not a set of mechanics. It's a brand.

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

If such a rule existed, you'd be right. Alas, the rule I think you're referencing is not general. It's very specific. Under "moving provokes", on page 290, the rule says "If an enemy leaves a square adjacent to you, you can make an opportunity attack against that enemy." This rule very...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

It's explained in that lengthy OP, and the title of the thread. He uses a glaive, which is a polearm that is a heavy blade. So when he takes his OA, instead of making a basic attack he makes an at-will attack. Which, in addition to being a better attack, allows him to mark with Warpriest's...

Can you do a "diamond" shaped blast?

Nope. It doesn't have any sides; it's just a collection of individual blocks. See the diagram on page 272, which shows what happens when you shoot a close blast 3 on the diagonal. See the diagram on page 272, which shows what happens when you shoot a close blast 3 on the diagonal.

D&D 4E Crafting... can anyone make anything in 4E?

I think that's one of the best features about 4E. The game gives you the rules you need, and does not force other rules upon you. For example, there are no rules for determining height and weight. This is as close as 4e gets: "Each race description in Chapter 3 gives the average height and...

Can you do a "diamond" shaped blast?

:) Pretty funny, but I think the diagram on page 272 shows exactly what happens when you shoot a blast 3 diagonally. It looks like a 3x3 box. It doesn't look like the diagram in that PDF. Also, the rules specify (as you pointed out) 3 squares on a side. The area filled in that diagram does not...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

Those are specific triggers, not general rules. They don't apply to Polearm Gamble's trigger. It doesn't need to mention that. The OA interrupts the move, so it occurs before the move adjacent is completed. Your weapon's reach satisfies the general rule "must be able to make a melee basic...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

This was addressed elsewhere in the thread. To summarize: 1. the OA is triggered by "enter adjacent square." OAs interrupt the target's action. 2. Therefore the OA takes place before the movement to an adjacent square is completed. 3. The rules for OA (produced in their entirety on page 290 of...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

I'm certain that's the way OAs work. Otherwise, you'd never be able to take an OA, because by the time your interpretation allows you to take a swing, the target is out of reach. Consider: an enemy is adjacent to you. He take a move action to move directly away. This triggers an OA (see rules...

    Sacrificial Bunnies (Warlock curse question)

Man, I've replied twice with the same statement. Essentially: 4E kindly asks players to play reasonably, and ignore lame exploits. They even made a rule forbidding lame exploits--just so everything is crystal clear. The bag of bunnies doesn't work because it's dumb. It also doesn't work because...

    Sacrificial Bunnies (Warlock curse question)

It *is* based on "metagame factors". 4E asks that you recognize that when you and your friends sit around a table and play a game, you are in fact sitting around a table and playing a game. The "credible threat" rule is there as a way to formalize the general social contract of a roleplaying...

Game in one hour - will this 3-PC party be OK?

Haha. My only experience with Warlord has been via Dragonborn, and therefore Inspiring Warlord builds. But man, Tactical sure sounds fun--so long as you've got a big bruiser in the party. It wouldn't work with a charisma paladin, or a charisma rogue. But it'd work great with a Str cleric, or...

Game in one hour - will this 3-PC party be OK?

Well, Commander's Strike is a melee weapon power, so you need to be in reach of the target. If I'm that close, I want to just go ahead and attack the guy myself. Although... I see what you're saying. You could be an 8 Str gnome with a reach weapon, and commander's strike lets you nail the bad...

Game in one hour - will this 3-PC party be OK?

In my book, you spend your standard action to give a buddy a basic attack. That 1 attack at a cost of one standard action. Compare to Viper's Strike, where you spend a standard to attack, and potentially allow a buddy to make a basic attack. That's potentially 2 attacks at a cost of one...

Game in one hour - will this 3-PC party be OK?

It's a very solid group. I'd swap Commander's Strike for Viper's Strike, because anything that gives your big brute another attack is a good thing. Also, your rogue should consider taking WF: dagger and TWF before taking Backstabber. Backstabber adds roughly +1 damage per sneak attack die--but...
