D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

The DMG actually has guidance for arbitrating number of enemies hit by AE, and it gives you ~2 for Burning Hands it's true (though note it puts you in melee range!), but it gives you 4 for fireball (radius / 5 = 4)

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Wow, I was closer than I expected. And yep, that's pretty much how the system works out. So you use your higher level much better spells whenever they are in fact much better, only downgrading when it's actually in your best interest. So you're more effective overall and can burn through spell...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

I don't have access to the DMG right now, so these #s are a little pulled out of nowhere, but for example let's say that normally my spell pyramid would look like 4 1st, 3 2nd, 2 3rd level spells. So I cast my 2 fireballs per day and then use a bunch of (very very very) subpar burning hands...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Concentration Bugging You?

I think I'd be tempted to say that you make a single Con save each round, and you only lose concentration once you take total damage equal to 10 + 2 * your result, with 1 autofailing and 20 autosucceeding as usual.

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Between the wonky scaling and the limits on 6th - 9th, I suspect 5E spell points will work better than any of the other spell point systems I've run across. Unfortunately I'm not sure how much that means, and I don't have direct experience with 5e's version due to shying away from them after...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell check ?

Yep, those are the restrictions for casting _on your turn_. But if there was a reaction cantrip, you'd be good to use both it and a bonus action. Note that you can use any type of reaction spell when it's not your turn, even if you use a bonus action and cantrip on your turn. So you can do 3...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell check ?

Because...? It certainly could be the case that there should be a rule to stop you from doing so, but there's no real difference between casting a spell, then using Shield to avoid an opportunity attack as you move, all on the same turn, and casting a spell and countering someone else's attempt...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell check ?

Perkins is used to a previous version of the rules in which you could not take reactions on your own turn.

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell check ?

That could be. It's possible you don't have proficiency in spellcasting, but just add the proficiency bonus in every stated use of it. You're probably right. Maybe? It's atypical to how they're handling the system to work that way, and fits the rest of the system better to get the proficiency...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell check ?

It is a spellcasting ability check, much like Counterspell, yep.

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

In my experience, spell point systems lead inexorably to 5-minute work days, because you can exhaust all of your points _very rapidly_ by using all top level spells, and have little incentive not to do so. It's possible 5E dodges some of that (many spells scale horribly so it's not worth...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell check ?

    1) d20 + Int + prof for a wizard, d20 + Cha + prof for a sorcerer; the same number you use for making magic attacks or adding 8 to for save DCs. 2) Yes, if you cast a spell, another caster uses counterspell, you can use your own counterspell to counter that counterspell, though you only get one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Point buy or Dice?

I used to not care all that much one way or another, until I realized that rolled characters were above average statistically. Then I studied things a bit more, over the course of years, occasionally checking some odds. And realized they were _far_ above average. Like beyond the bounds of...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

It's possible to have someone fly and be invisible. You just need multiple sources of concentration. For example, have the wizard cast Fly on someone and that someone drink a potion of invisibility. It certainly takes a lot more work. Overall, the edition suggests using different tactics from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Concentration Bugging You?

I have seen amazing variance between the effectiveness of various abilities depending on TotM or grid. Of course, I've seen amazing variance in both depending on DM as well. The last 5 casters I ran into in D&D were all outside, though, for reference. 2 of the 5 were on a grid; and all could...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Concentration Bugging You?

I did run into someone who was casting Silence on objects and carrying them around so the AE was mobile. DM realized that wasn't how the spell worked when he tried to figure out how to cast it directly on a caster or caster's gear and folks saw that it had to be a point in space like any other...

D&D 5E (2014) RE: Tarasque vs. 5th lv. Wizard scenario - how does Wizard know to use Acid Splash?!?

I kinda wish Wish had been removed, as a spell. In this instance, I'm guessing because it forces you to have certain party members, which is no longer considered kosher.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Concentration Bugging You?

Not really; I'm just comparing it in relative terms. For example, a comparable 3e fighter might swing for 60 damage in 3e (or 4e) instead of maybe 12 damage in 5e. _Everyone_ is nerfed in 5e. All the math is more constrained. So yeah, a 3e wizard with 16 Con has less hp than a 5e wizard with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can a PC perform a miracle with a stat/skill check?

Correct! As billd91 notes, it's in how you design the adventures. But a DC 15 oak door in 5e stays DC 15 and a DC 15 oak door in 4e stays DC 15, no matter the level of the PCs. Now, a level 1 adventure might have a DC 15 oak door and a level 20 adventure might have a DC 35 unobtainium door...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can a PC perform a miracle with a stat/skill check?

If you decide that oak doors are DC 15 in 5e, then they should probably be 15 forever, sure. Unless it's an oak door banded in iron, or spiked in, or warped from the weather or any other excuse you want. In 4e, if you decide oak doors are a 15 check to open, then technically they remain so for...
