    Dragon 370 - Design & Development: Cosmology

Provided that planes are almost incomprehensibly HUGE (yes, I like the sense of scale bordering on the mind-boggling) I have no issue either way - the planes can be truly infinite or they can simply be vast. I guess this sort of meshes with your point that it is a pointless change, because no...

    Dragon 370 - Design & Development: Cosmology

I don't like a design approach that tries to overhomogenize, shoehorn or retcon settings. This has been recurring throughout the editions of D&D, but often in different guises. AD&D used the Great Wheel for all published settings. On the positive note, however, it did allow for the exclusion of...

German publisher of D&D 4E won't renew contract

That sounds a bit resentful. Yes, it is a clone in as much as taking a similar name (Yay, let's have a two word name where both words start with "D") and also due to the use of a similar fantasy genre/millieu. Than again, D&D is the grandfather of all modern RPGs (where 'modern' stands for new...

German publisher of D&D 4E won't renew contract

The game is a bout 3-years old. I hadn't know about Torg, before you mentioned it, but looking it up on Wikipedia, the chart idea does look similar, so maybe the game is not quite as innovative as I thought and actually copied the idea from Torg. Still, the other aspects of the game seem very...

German publisher of D&D 4E won't renew contract

jdrakeh is correct, it's a game called Draci Doupe, which translates as Dragon's Lair. The game actually has two supported sets of rules. The first set, based on the original rules from right after the collapse of Socialism is version 1.6 and is the most popular. It is essentially the same game...

German publisher of D&D 4E won't renew contract

I am from Slovakia and even when attending my Austrian university in Vienna, for a substantial portion of the time I lived in Bratislava and commuted. Perhaps the situation is different in the Czech Republic, but in Slovakia there does seem to be a decline in D&D's popularity (OK, so there were...

Pramas: Does 4E have staying power?

Thanks for the additional clarification. I guess I cannot help being interested in industry matters, such as sales and so on, so I always appreciate when somebody with better information than I have chimes in - even if the information is not the full picture. :)

German publisher of D&D 4E won't renew contract

Interesting about D&D not being the dominant RPG in Germany. In Slovakia and the Czech Republic, D&D is also not the most popular RPG. That honor belongs to a domestic (well, Czech) RPG system. I would also note the observation that gamers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic tend to be more...

    OOTS 613 is up!

Yay for Belkar, my favorite OOTS character! However... left alone with two high level rogues while Celia carries Haley off... I have a feeling Belkar's prophecy is soon to be fulfilled. :(

Pramas: Does 4E have staying power?

There is little doubt in my mind that there will be a 5E. There are only two questions for me. One is that of timing: i.e. whether 5E will come in 10 years or in say 5 years. The other question is that of direction: i.e. whether 5E will be based on the 4th edition, or if it will attempt to base...

Pramas: Does 4E have staying power?

I would like to take the time to thank Chris Pramas for sharing this with us. Sure, his sources are somewhat anecdotal, but they seem like very large anecdotes (large chains), which means they are probably somewhat indicative of the overall situation. Thanks for sharing this with us, Chris, most...

Do you play more for the story or the combat?

I have to disagree, but our disagreement may be in what we understand under the term simulation or tropes. The tropes I like in D&D are the monsters, the spells, the races and similar things. I don't necessarily like the 'trope' that jumping from a 5-mile high tower has only a very limited...

Do you play more for the story or the combat?

My position is also really an abstain, but I voted for story anyway.

Do you play more for the story or the combat?

I voted for story, but that misrepresents my position. Alas, there were no other options on the poll. I think I would say that I particularly enjoy the 'simulation' aspect of D&D. This is especially the case when I DM. Before anybody tells me that I should pick another game (which for some...

    Aeon (updated 10/9/14)

It seems to me that Oronthonian and Uedian beliefs are already mostly reconciled... it's just that it's not official yet. Reconciliation between the Adversary and Oronthon is also possible (though the Adversary might merely be scheming, which is less likely to be said of Nature), why not have...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder RPG Beta Release is available!

I think they are good for the most part. I particularly like the change to saving throws, as I have been suggesting de-frontloading of good saves for a long time now and its heartening to see it implemented. Hopefully, this will help cut down on saving throw stacking abuse.

    Aeon (updated 10/9/14)

Due to the general trends in the story, as well as because of the most recent events, I am wondering about the distinctiveness of Oronthonian and Uedian perspectives. It seems that these are beginning to tend together and I would posit that this may even result in a 'unified' perspective where...
