The tutorial fails to mention that you won't get exactly the image they created unless you make your black square exactly centered in your image, which I suspect is your problem.

When I need to work in a higher resolution and I want to use this technique, I just select individual islands and move them around and combine them into larger ones if needed. If you try to scale them up, the edges just get pixellated all to heck.

I was initially neutral on the whole thing; I haven't played D&D in awhile, and I don't publish any D&D material. The more I hear about it, though, the more interested I get! I'm downright stoked now, and looking forward to starting up a new campaign next year when the new core books come out. :)
