Personally, I want to play a studious cleric-like Bard who uses quotes from say, the Bhagavad Gita (the nuclear missile-sounding stuff) or the Old Testament or something like that. Not music, but poetics. This approach would be exactly what I would use to play this character.

I would allow either approach to work in my game and use the former approach...Good clerics don't actually use Animate Dead, so why not replace it?

Are you familiar at all with the Book of Nine Swords? Does he HAVE the book? If he doesn't, he won't be doing much. You need the maneuvers in the book to do anything, it's a whole new system. Instead of choosing their readied maneuvers like other classes, when an encounter begins, crusaders...

I'm not claiming that. I'm claiming that dragons taken as a species, have had some subset able to cast spells ever since 1e. In the Basic book I have, dragons have a chance to cast spells. In 3e, younger dragons cannot cast spells.

But they always have? Not all dragons at any period in time, but that's not true in 3.0 or 3.5 either.

I think you're making too fine a distiction there. Dragons have very slow spell progressions relative to HD. To me, it's annoying that they don't have better progressions.

VERY important. Detect magic will go through wood, but not iron.

Personally, I think of a pair of slippers with pointed toes and slightly flared ankle-openings.
