What's the most significant difference you've found with 4e from 3e?

I'm curious about this. How hard is it honestly to apply the same to 3E? You can create treasure packets for 3E, and forget about rolling treasure. You can swap out the CR system for a blanket XP system. The rest of your points stem from the XP system. Do you really think it's impossible to...

What's the most significant difference you've found with 4e from 3e?

Yah, I'm with you on this. The disconnect between rules for PCs and rules for NPCs/Monsters puts me off DMing completely. The nonsensical rules and powers put me off playing completely.

OneNote a GMs holy grail :) (In case youve never used MS OneNote)

I just started entering information for my next campaign into onenote. I've been looking for something this useful, and was expecting to make it myself. Now I don't have to because something far better exists! I can't help wondering if there's an SRD in this format somewhere already... anyone?

    Playing 4e "Old School"

This is one of my concerns with prepared adventures. To keep true to previous editions, there needs to be a lot of minion types - especially at low levels. Yet playing through KOTS it seems minions are the exception rather than the rule. They're present in most battles, but are outnumbered by...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

Staying upright on a rocking surface is a balance check. Not throwing up on a rolling sea is a sea legs (profession sailor) check. They're not the same thing. Balance doesn't teach you how to tack, and knowing how to sail doesn't teach you how to walk on a thin ledge. They're separate skills...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

To you. I get the distinct impression that you feel no-one is able to disagree with you on this issue. I happen to find that "Roll... you manage it well" is very fun, particularly when it means you're then able to get on with the story instead of playing out 3 hours of dialog that has little or...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

I was still discussing feel. It feels (to me at least) as though 4E was written as a rule set, and the fluff was added later. Whereas all previous editions feel (again, to me) as though they were creating fluff first, and attaching rules to 'describe' the fluff. When rules become more important...

Forked Thread: Name exactly what 4E is "missing"

It's missing powers (at every available level) that DON'T deal damage. I'm fearful for the illusionist... what will we get? Powers that 'use illusion'... to deal XdY + int damage. YAWN! And I'm going to limit myself here and not list all my other complaints, many of which have already been...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

To those that wish to remove craft and profession: These two skill (sets) take up 2 columns in the players handbook. That's one page out of the entire book. What do you feel should have been included INSTEAD? What is missing, that is of so much value that these two skills need to be axed...

    D&D 3.x Statblocks - how to turn 3E creatures into 4E blocks?

How do you change statblocks for 3E into something as simple to use as the 4E statblock? Is it even possible? I'm open to simplifying the way monsters work in order to do this. In fact, that's a primary goal. I'd like to see 3E style and flavour integrated with the ease of use people are raving...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Not enough. Mind you, spending more than 50% of our time in combat has a lot to do with it. Seems 2 defenders, 2 strikers, 1 controller and one leader doesn't have enough hitting power. Hardly. I'm saying the flip side of the same thing. Poker is balanced, that doesn't make it a childrens game...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

Sorry if I'm repeating, I haven't read this thread in full, but I think the OP and many others have missed the most important use of craft. What do you do when you're stranded without equipment? Hope you have someone who can make good enough equipment to get you by for a time so that you can...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Precisely my problem. I've now had my third game, and the term board game suits it perfectly. It plays like a board game. Particularly in the sense that it feels like it was written for 'ages 8 +' because everything is so balanced that no one can complain or cry 'unfair'. DnD does not require...

Name 1 thing from AD&D and Second Edition and 3/3.5 that 4E doesn't have in core

1st: creatures that die in one hit 2nd: several classes 3rd: 1000x current level XP table -edit- alright, if you want to be picking about minions. Creatures that die in 2 hits. We either need 1 or 4-10 hits.

Prep for a time strapped DM

Excellent work Fenes. Far better than my method - spend years preparing before even starting the campaign. However, my method may still prove useful to some who haven't considered it. Specifically what I've done is create lists. A long list of adventure hooks, a long list of associated...

Name one thing you love and one thing you hate about 4e D&D

Love: That I'm playing monthly and we're back to level 1 Hate: 4E

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Because it's a sacred cow? Cards are new, and thus haven't filtered in to the part of my brain that is labeled DnD. In that sense, the character sheet IS DnD. While I understand what you're driving at, if I do end up running a game for that particular selection of people, it would be...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

I guess it depends on if you like sifting through piles of cards or not. I'm leaning towards not. This is totally subjective and personal, but I feel it's taking me away from the character sheet, and thus altering the way DnD works on a very fundamental level. Having a dozen small bits of paper...

    So... My Group Just Broke...

Wow. My current situation is totally unrelated to DnD, but you just stepped in with the ultimate answer. I've just spent the last 24 hours trying to rationalize an irrational action, and your statement comes as the most profound revelation. Thank you!
