Ways to assess an encounter early

Oops, I meant to add a poll to this post, but I took longer than 10 minutes, so I couldn't. I know many DMs that reveal defenses, some early as a policy, some eventually (after several attack rolls) as a convenience. I know some DMs that will occasionally reveal an enemy or encounter's...

Ways to assess an encounter early

As a player, one of the main problems I have in an encounter is figuring out when to deploy daily and other resources. Sometimes it's easy, such as when a character really needs healing to stay in the fight (you spend the surge), or when targets are perfectly positioned for that area-affecting...

    Swordmage's Decree & Hybrid Swordmages

It occurred to me that this detail is an excellent litmus test, since it repeats the offending issue. Since the hybrid aegis power recovers when a target dies, it would recover when the first target died. A common (and well-discussed) tactic for paragon-tier hybrid swordmages is to try mark at...

Biologically immortal humans would live 600-700 years.

Quite true, especially that last point. On the other hand, disciplined, sedentary, low-risk lifestyles are not rare in fantasy settings. Despite the fact that Rolemaster penalized their self-discipline (IIRC), Tolkien's elves remind me a lot of vulcans: cerebral and monastic creatures that...

    Swordmage's Decree & Hybrid Swordmages

If we're going by RAW, the power seems to say that the Swordmage's Decree replicates the Aegis mark in all ways. Therefore, when any of the Aegis-marked targets die, the power would be recharged. It wouldn't depend on whether the effect was initially caused by the regular Aegis power or by...

    DDI Character Builder

I think this is what they will do as well: keep it as a for-pay subscription product with little to no resources assigned to its upkeep and maintenance, and no new material for 4e. This would be really frustrating for me. I'm happy to pay for what we have been getting: new content, Compendium...

Biologically immortal humans would live 600-700 years.

... at least according to the guys behind this research: Q: Does the 2nd law of thermodynamics imply that everything must eventually die, regardless of the ultimate fate of the universe? | Ask a Mathematician / Ask a Physicist The relevant bit: At first glance, this fits with many settings'...

Super-Specific Rules Question: Fire Resist, Flamewall Strike, and Phoenix Step

It may have been obvious to you, Balesir, but it obviously was not the only obvious take on the issue for me. Strange that you missed that... This is all very solid support. Thanks for looking it up and citing it in depth.

DM Minion: Digital Encounter\Combat Managment Tool for the iPad and Android Tablets

This is particularly good in light of my fear that the Monster Builder will eventually be taken offline.

Super-Specific Rules Question: Fire Resist, Flamewall Strike, and Phoenix Step

I don't have a particular view on this issue, but I'm wondering if Obryn and Manbearmeow know of any support for their take other than their understanding of the language. I could easily agree with them, but I could just as easily consider damage that was resisted still damage that was taken...

    D&D 4E 4eTurnTracker, D&D 4e Combat Manager

I'm on my phone, so forgive the short response. Warforged Resolve triggers a save. Or any healing power if you take the mark of healing feat.

    D&D 4E Introducing 4eTurnTracker!

I'm going to be terrible at this, since my MO is to fumble around with the software until I sigh and then go look at the documentation, if at all. But, scrolling through it, it looks really nice.

    D&D 4E 4eTurnTracker, D&D 4e Combat Manager

I figured it out: all I had to do is read. I had the non-beta version, and the pre-programmed effects are only on the beta version. It's VERY good. Seriously. Excellent. Hopefully helpful feedback: I would integrate the "End Condition" portion into the "Add Condition" and "Bonus/Penalty...

    D&D 4E 4eTurnTracker, D&D 4e Combat Manager

This is what I want. But I'm too stupid to figure out how to do it. Let me try again.

    D&D 4E Introducing 4eTurnTracker!

My main issue is that I can't figure out how to prepare a power's conditions or effects before hand, so that in combat, I can just, for example, drag the effect to a few targets and have it applied properly. Adding these details in during the middle of combat is too troublesome, at least for me.

D&D 5E (2014) Getting Bonus Skills from a High Int Score

I'd be fine with gaining additional Lore skills based on a character's Int bonus. But I agree with my mini pony that a high Int has little guarantee of a character being something other than knowledgeable.

Pathfinder 1E Sense motive became lie detector

I would never give a player a flat out yes or no on whether a character is lying. Depending on the roll, the skill would yield information such as (in no particular order): - definitely withholding something - seems nervous about his mother-in-law - doesn't like snakes - has daddy issues - might...

Homebrew: "Twin Strike" for an Avenger

This seems like a good idea. One that might need less work is the assassin: as long as you fluff shadow as some kind of divine power, you're good. And the flavor, in my mind, is already very middle-eastern: Assassins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

D&D 5E (2014) PCs Making Their Own Magic Items

I'd say that if it takes some significant effort to locate, it counts as a quest (whether it be easy or difficult). Not that this is necessarily a bad thing: I voted for quests in the above poll. However, Obryn's post made re-think the effectiveness of making quests the default manner of...

D&D 5E (2014) PCs Making Their Own Magic Items

I don't think this is necessarily the case. The fact that one party makes is willing to sell a good does not make that good "available" on the market. There have to be a certain amount of these goods to make them "marketable." Therefore, if the item is rare or very rare, there may, in fact, be...
