    The troll art is up

At a guess, that's a troll, a giant troll and a war troll. They look pretty darn good, I think; better than the previews, really, and better than the 3e version. (Which itself was a tremendous improvement over the 1e/2e trolls.) They do look green and slimy, but I'd guess it's the same kind of...

D&D 4E Notes from the 4E Corebooks: Alignment, Monsters, Artifacts and More

Depends on what you mean by CG or LE. If you mean "an individualistic, even anarchic but selfless and charitable person" and "someone selfish and callous who still respects the idea of law and order", sure you can; they're just called Good and Evil by the new rules. If, however, you want to be...

    Five Alignments?

The fact that people can, and constantly do, have so wildly different ideas of what Chaotic and Lawful mean is, IMO, the best reason to give up on them and streamline the alignments.

    Monster Manual 2 Cover Hint

Regardless of the quality, or lack thereof, of the pics above (and I like them both, really), I'm really baffled why would anyone find the 1e MM pic of Demogorgon good without massive doses of intravenous nostalgia. ;)

    Five Alignments?

It's not very surprising, if you recall that BECMI edition had the alignments as Lawful, Neutral and Chaotic, with strong implications that Chaotic was usually the same as "evil" and Lawful the same as "good". I'm getting a stronger and stronger BECMI vibe from 4e, really. :)

    Detect Magic is Dead

Pretty much, yes. The long ecology/society entries of 2e MM are gone, and fun as those were, I'm not troubled. (If only because, as it's already been said several times over, the orcs of Eberron and FR are quite different anyway.)

    Five Alignments?

Someone on RPG.net suggested an (alternative?) take of this: Good - pure, altruistic, saintly good. LG - social goodness, moderated by the society and the laws. Unaligned - getting along and minding your own business CE - petty, selfish evil, without an overarching motivation. Evil - pure...

    Orcs preview

On the subject of people wanting more background information on orcs in Monster Manual... Every time that WotC has released some fluff, half the people are up in arms because a) they don't want fluff at all, or b) they want different fluff that fits their worlds. I'm sure that whatever they...

    Are Rituals Vaporware?

As I see it, the rituals have the following purposes. a) Clear up the stat blocks. No more mariliths with animate dead in their loooong list of spell-like abilities... because against a party that stands a chance to beat the demon herself, the undead are going to be a speedbump at most. And...

    Orcs preview

On the "fighting orcs at 1st level" thing, wasn't that kind of a dangerous idea in 3e already? The orc warriors in MM are strong enough to hit fairly often, and do a hellacious amount of damage for a "cannon fodder" critter.

    Daily Art Preview

The orcs look good, I think. They're appropriately brutish-looking there.

That's a good one, as well. I guess I just don't like patchwork monsters.

    I Really Like Keywords

The dice icons work with colorblind people, and in black-and-white print / copies, though.

    Daily Art Preview

Well... yeah. Because it's a critter that could be described as "It's like a lion, with a spiked tail, and wings, and a head kind of like a bearded man's." It looks like a real creature of its own, instead of just a mythological mash-up of human and animal parts. (For the same reason, I really...

Hmm... that's tolerable, all right. I'm one of those who think the 3e manticore was the superior version, though...

Intimidate, or "whoops I wasted my skill points"

Well... Intimidate is perfect for dealing with NPCs who you don't have to or want to deal with again, or who are already unfriendly or hostile to you. It's of a somewhat limited scope, certainly, but not useless as such. As for 4e, I'd like to get more information about the other social skills...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

Never played Hero System, but I have no beef at all with GURPS. I do hate LBB Traveller, though; it manages to have just enough setting hardcoded into the rules (the jump drive, prevalence of guns, tech assumptions, character careers) to make it a bother to make your own setting that doesn't...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

This. People are still, I guess, approaching this from 3.5 mindset.

First house rule: Tieflings have small horns

The amount of time and effort spent griping about tiefling horns, or whether dragonborn have breasts, or what kind of a hair should a gnome have to look like a gnome, is frankly astonishing. Wasn't this supposed to be a game of imagination, not of nit-picking illustrations?

    Excerpt: skill challenges

It's particularly amusing, considering all the doomsaying about people being able to use any skill, any time, anywhere, to achieve anything. Now, when we get shown that the DM can perfectly well rule that some skills aren't going to help in the challenge, people are screaming about that.
