    Down with Darkvision!

I agree with most posters on this topic, it seems glaringly obvious problem if you look at basic monster traits. I guess a lot of people just ignore lightning in their game (like Order of the Stick : http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0076.html). When I want monsters to see in the dark, I just...

How do you like your halflings best?

Proto-hobbity "hidden folk" style. Not necessarily kleptomaniacs or rogues, but talented.

    Elves Are Not Doomed!

A bit of trivia: The word "nymph" was often translated as "elf" into germanic languages. This alone talks volumes about mythological elves. The Tolkien elves might not be like that or you might want to see them differently, but to say elves are not inherently connected to nature is really way...

    Name that race

Wolverine is "rosomak" in Slavic languages, including Russian.

The problem with elves (question posed)

Yeah, they are supposed to leave behind lots of ruins with powerful magical artifacts... :\

The problem with elves (question posed)

Remember, elves do not need to be complete pacifist to become extinct, little pacifism is just enough. The problem of elves is that they are not attacking. They are not trying to invade human and orc cities, burn their crops and crush them into dust. Even if they have amazing cities and castles...

The problem with elves (question posed)

The Answer Well, they decided to leave this world for another one, where there are no orcs or humans and can't go there. Only a few were left behind or decided to stay, mostly because they loved humans and eventually give rise to interesting bloodlines... These ideas are literally hundreds...

    What's the weakest wizard specialty?

Not to say something about the fact that enchanter specialist can have charisma 6 and be just fine, which just doesn't sound right.

    Long-term planning for D&D characters

Exactly. When I hear people brag at 1st level how badass their character will be at level 20, the evil DM in me awakens and wants to show them who is badass.

Why are hit points generated randomly?

No, I don't think it does. Fighters supposedly have more hit points because they are more used to taking wounds. And I always thought that low hit points of wizards reflect sword and sorcery paradigm that magic is taxing and corrupts your body (and your soul). For the record we use either...

Classical Tales of Deals with the Devil

Try Krabat by Otfried Preussler. It is based on actual 17century stories. I think in english it is called "Satanic mill".

Is a Wizard a better buffer then a cleric?

I think wizard should be a bit better buffer than cleric. But then, he usually has better things to do than buffing.

    Tzimisce

I always thought it was derived from "Iōannēs Tzimiskēs", the Byzantine emperor. Does it mean anything in Hungarian?

What are the rules for re-stringing a bow or xbow after snapped string?

With a sword.... no problem. Swords are sharp.... On the other hand restringing a crossbow is very difficult, unstrung crossbow is curved completely to the other side.

What is the standard ability score set? Are most games playing too high?

My experience with various point buys is this: 1)If you get used to higher point buys it is difficult to go back, because the players will complain. This is your usual power creep thing, that exists in other parts of the game too. 2)In lower point buy: a)Some characters are greatly...

Fictional creatures that would make good monsters

We call it Hockauf, but you are right, I have never seen that adopted to any RPG. In our country it only scares travellers to death, I think. I am pretty certain there are countless creatures like this in folklore, that have never been adapted.

    Exotic Weapon - Greatscythe

It is true that scythe, while it can be dangerous, is hardly a weapon. In fact there exist a weapon called fauchard, which is really just a straightened scythe (and faucard is a scythe in french). This should tell you something. I don't think I would like to parry a scythe with my bare hands...

    Magic System Discussion

I think the most important is to break the "spells per day" paradigm. If you can cast a powerful spell once a month, you will not live in a high magic world (or a D&D like world, to be more to the point), even thought the spells are still the same. I played in a homebrewed game where magic...
