Unearthed Arcana Cast your guess for upcoming Unearthed Arcana

I am expecting an article soon about extreme environments. So underwater, frozen wastelands, darksun like silt seas, stuff like that. My reasoning is you can use it to test all kinds of material from sea elves, arctic dwarves, harpoons and snow shoes, new subclasses based around survival or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

When surprise ends doesn't seem to be 100% clear to some people. What is crystal clear is when a character can take reactions, and that is what he was saying. If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wild Shape & Hit Dice

I never even thought of this before seeing the Sage Advice post here. http://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/09/05/can-wild-shaped-druid-use-hit-dice-after-short-rest/ And from the PHB. When you transform, you assume the beast's hit points and Hit Dice. So I understand that his answer is right, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlord Healing

Give them healing. In combat non-magic healing is already possible in at least two ways. Fighter second wind ability works once and is recovered with a short rest, and the Healer feat also once per short rest. If the game allows for someone to move 30' (possibly more depending on race), reach...

So, What's The Challenge Rating Of All Those Demon Lords?

What I find humorous is the old saying "If it has stats we can kill it!" applies here very well. We can kill Demogorgon, Orcus, Tiamat, and all these other powerful beings because they now have stats. Who doesn't have stats? Drizzt Do'urden

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

I went searching for anything else that works with the surprise mechanic and found some. Before I get into this I am still a firm believer that surprise ends when the creatures first turn is over for all the reasons I have stated before. Also not sure if the following supports that opinion or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Correct, but it does say when the creature can take actions (reactions are a special type of action) and that is after the end of it's first turn. The options for when surprise does end come down to the following. When the surprised creatures first turn is over and they can take reactions...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss - No Drizzt afterall?

I think there was a bunch of speculation because it was stated he made an appearance and then there was a bunch of vague talk about how a certain renegade drow was causing problems. That certain renegade drow is in actuality a drow male wizard named Gromph Baenre and not a dual wielding...

    D&D 5E (2014) Whack-a-mole gaming or being healed from 0 hp

My "e" would be: gain a level of exhaustion when you gain your first failed death save. This gives the healer a chance to hopefully bring you back without the penalty, it puts the roll into the hands of the downed player, but it isn't as severe as gaining a level of exhaustion when you go to 0 h.p.

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Ranger Great Weapon Master

Seems like a solid idea. The only issue I see is you need a 13 Dex to multiclass with Ranger.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

But that isn't the rule. And nothing else in the entire game is tied to the end or start of a "round".

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Pretty sure I am in a parallel universe because I think we already had this conversation. You are wrong and don't seem to be able to understand how wrong you are.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

It doesn't state directly a good many things in the rules. What it does say is. If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends. That is it, that is all surprise is/does. So by reading the rules for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Sure it wouldn't be the first time in this very long thread. In fact I think it would be around the 3rd or 4th time. Surprise limits your ability to move or take actions. After the end of your first turn you are allowed to take reactions. Reactions are a special type of action. So if you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

That is where you went wrong. Surprise ends once the surprised creatures first turn is over, it has nothing to do with a successful or failed attack. Example a creature is surprised and goes on initiative 11, every assassin that attacks that creature before 11 benefits from them being...

D&D 5E (2014) Dumb question re: Ensnaring Strike

Yes it is the first successful hit even if that hit kills the target. The paladin should be more selective of when they cast the spell and who they strike with the spell going. Now that is how the rules handle it, if the DM wants to be nice (some do) then sure they could let the spell stay up.

D&D 5E (2014) Dumb question re: Ensnaring Strike

The spell ends when the ranger stops concentrating on it or 10 rounds (1 minute) passes. The spell only affects the target of his first successful hit after casting though, so there is no reason to keep concentrating on the spell if the target is dead.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is "whimisical and dark" humour needed to offset the dark and depressed theme of Out of the Abyss?

That is odd, as Alice in Wonderland invokes many things to me with Tim Burton being near the top of that list. American McGee's Alice pc video game, the latest Alice in Wonderland movie by Tim Burton, and Red and Pleasant Land rpg setting for Lamentations of the Flame Princess rpg. This video...

    D&D 5E (2014) The word ‘Race’

The number of people should be of issue as in most things, when society as a whole wants a change, change happens and it should. But when a few members of the society want something they can try and make waves but all it ends up being is noise that no one pays attention to. In the southern...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is "whimisical and dark" humour needed to offset the dark and depressed theme of Out of the Abyss?

I like the idea of an as if directed by Tim Burton style D&D game, it seems a good number of other people do too, for those that don't like it just run it differently. Is that so hard? There are elements of some of the Pathfinder adventure paths that I don't like, I still ran them, I just...
