Adult mammoths are Huge, at the least. I don't have any more idea what's in the MM than you do, but I don't expect to see many Huge or larger minion write-ups. Reads more like a hazard than a fight.

The problem with the mammoth minion idea is that killing gigantic monsters in one hit is anti-climactic in the vast majority of cases, and thus detracts from drama rather than building it. So while you certainly could make mammoths minions, it probably isn't advisable unless the campaign is...

"Burst into flame" is a common turn of phrase. It means "to catch fire suddenly." A Google search on the phrase turns up 141,000 hits. It's not amusing or cringe-worthy in the slightest.

Are the PCs there? If so, the minions are still defined by how they relate to the PCs. They're either the schmos who the PCs kill in one hit, or the schmos the PCs couldn't save from being killed in one hit. If the PCs aren't there, then why are you running the combat at all?

The point is, the average person isn't a minion. Minions are something PCs fight. If an average person decides to fight the PCs for some reason, he may become a minion, and die in one hit...but then he's not just dying from a mere cut, he's dying from a longsword/arrow/magic missile...

In 3.X, the dragon's claw also misses on a 1 and does no damage. That's why, in either edition, it's best just to narrate situations like this rather than wasting time seeing how many rounds it takes a foregone conclusion to conclude.

It fixes cases where the paladin marks a target and then runs away from the fight entirely, which is almost certainly all it was intended to fix.

But he's still trading the power he likes least of his current powers for the one he likes most of the other class' powers. There's clearly some value added here, in a way that "replacing best with the best" doesn't convey.

If he was truly happy with all his powers, he probably wouldn't take the feat yet. If he does take the feat, then one of his powers is merely a stopgap, the one he found least objectionable for his character at the time.

But presumably you're giving up a power you didn't really care about in order to get a power that you really, really wanted and couldn't get any other way. If that's the case, giving up a feat doesn't sound so bad. If that's not the case, why are you doing it?
