D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Life gets in the way. Death by inactivity. From personal experience, you get excited, play 2-3 weekly sessions in the row, then you get couple of week where someone can't play, then you play session or two, then again couple of weeks of no play. Before you know, that 6 sessions was spread over...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Sure. But 5e high level characters ( tier 4) are powerhouses. Now, depending on the type of setting you run, those kind of characters can be so exceptionally rare that everyone knows about them (think Hercules level) and only very brave and very stupid try to mess with them. In a setting a la...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I ran decent amount of 5e high level adventures. First off, characters are powerful. Real powerful. Creating chalenging encounters starts to be problem. If you throw one or two high CR monsters, if party is decently optimized, they can wipe it first round, eventually 2 rounds. What usually...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

Depends on type of campaign and type of players. In casual h&s game, unless they can buy stuff that directly impacts their character performance, most players don't bother with other money sinks, cause it doesn't add anything to their play. In my personal experience, beyond level 3-4, gold...

Spoilers Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Started rewatching DS9 after rewatching TNG. Skipped straight to S5 when Dominion War starts. Not that early seasons are not fun, it's just that Dominion war is most interesting part of DS9 for me. Pissed off, bald and bearded Sisko is best Sisko. It's only ST that depicts full scale war from...

But it has to have iconic whistling tune. :D Star Wars universe is great scenery for war movies. Be it big battles, be it commandos behind lines, be it regular people resisting corrupt and oppressive regime. So much opportunity to remove story from Skywalkers, Emperor, jedi & sith conflict and...

Rogue One is in it's essence partisan war movie set in Star Wars universe. Bad guy is the Empire as a system. That's part of what makes Andor also good. Struggle against oppressive regime.

Well, i try not to look to deep into stuff. Boba Fett got 6.5 minutes of screen time and 3 spoken lines in original trology. All that implied subtext that you are debating is something maybe attentive adult watcher will catch. But for kids, teens and casual watchers that didn't think too deeply...

Boba was popular cause he looked cool. That's it. Great visual design of character. Captain Chrome, well, she just looked like shiny stormtrooper, with so much missed opportunity to develop her character, especially since Gwendolin Christie is great actress.

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

6-10. Low-1-5 - novice levels, by the end, your wizard gets it's iconic 3rd level spell slot and fighter his second attack Mid 6-10 - journeyman levels, characters are competent and start to establish themselves as someone of notice, casters get 4th and 5th level spells, 2/4 archetype features...

And most of that potential is thrown down the drain by The rise of Skywalker.

    D&D 5E (2014) 2024 D&D is 2014 D&D with 4E sprinkled on top

Rulings over rules. 2ed was way less codified and had more DMs rulings involved. 3e and 4e had very heavily codifed rules. 5e relaxes that to a degree. They did throw in some sprinkles from 4e. Core of what makes 4e 4e is AEDU system, unified resource system across all classes.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why are you still playing D&D?

One reason i forgot to add. It's easy to house rule things. After a decade of playing and running it, i think i have pretty solid grasp of mechanics so i can tweak it when i need to.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why are you still playing D&D?

Familiarity and convenience and it gets the job done for type of games we like to play. For half the group, it's their favourite system, for other, second favourite. When we toss ideas for new games, when it comes to choosing which system, it boils down to either 5e or Chronicles of Darkness ( i...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

You just described my core group. Except that most of them play for 20-25 years. But beside me writing here, none of us use reddit, watch dnd yt content or anything social media related to ttrpgs and dnd in general. One friend has all non adventure 5e books, sitting on shelf, never once opened...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Well, imho, most groups that i know, very rarely play 1-20 and don't really use published adventures. In 3.x usually it was start at 4th and play to 8-10th (the goldilock zone of 3.x). For higher levels, start at level 8-10 and go from there. How casuals play depends on playstyle of people that...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Desacrate+animate dead (or create and greater create undead) in combination with prestige classes from Libris mortis. Raise enough meat shields for easy buffing time. Or just send them out and mop up after they are done. There were enough of buffing and spell layering in 3.5 and it was quite...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Ad&d solved it by having different xp progression (wizard was lagging aprox half a level behind fighter until lv 7) and very high attrition rate among wizards at low levels, coupled with small number of spells per day and vancian casting. It was game that relied on player skill rather than...

How do you layer your pizza?

Dough somwhere between Napolitana and Romana. Tomato sauce with oregano and some garlic. Spicy cured sausage, thinly sliced. And then cheese galore. Provalone, mozzarella stagionata, some gorgonzola.

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Don't forget Righteus might. I loved that spell. It was downright nasty when paired with monkey grip and huge keen scythe. 3.x/PF1 loved those bonus hoarding and buff stacking (so long as it granted different type of bonus, but there were quite a few of those). Pre fight buffing was...
