I fancy an idea of a good necromancer defending a castle from a siege. As archers from the castle slay a number of attackers, the good necromancer animates the dead. The attackers are now forced to slay their former comrades.

YES!! This was in Basic D&D. Halflings could get to level 8, Elves to 10, and Dwarves to 12. Then they'd start getting ranks, which were represented by letters. So you could have a level 12 F Dwarf. LOL, I forgot about that! In AD&D 1e and 2e, there were level limits for all demihumans...

You know, the Fighter, Cleric, Thief, and Magic User should be called "the original four" or "the basic four" It's fairly common and quite easy to form a very effective party without any of these classes.

I believe there was an optional rule somewhere along the way where you could break the level barrier, but it took double the XP. I know the level limit could also be pushed back if your prime requisite was high enough.

I wasn't asking why dwarf wizards are/were considered against type, I was asking, after 15 years of being a viable class, if we've moved on. I started playing when Dwarf, Elf, and Halfling were classes too.

Good point. Multiclassing is tough in this game. It's not the power grab it was in 2e, that's for sure!

They fell behind power wise because they had smaller weapons. Now, that's not an issue.

He will fall behind any real warrior when they hit 5th level and the warriors get extra attacks. Cool character though!

We have been able to play dwarf wizards since 3e came out in the year 2000. Is playing a dwarf wizard still "playing against type"? Or can it be considered the norm now? Since being allowed to, the dwarf race has never had any disadvantage casting spells. What do you guys think?
