D&D 5E (2014) Is a dwarf wizard still "playing against type"?

We have been able to play dwarf wizards since 3e came out in the year 2000.

Is playing a dwarf wizard still "playing against type"? Or can it be considered the norm now?

Since being allowed to, the dwarf race has never had any disadvantage casting spells.

What do you guys think?

It might not be the norm, but it is a perfectly acceptable build. One of the things 5e has done really well is allow non-optimized counter-intuitive builds still to be viable and fun.

I think one reason it still feels like playing against type to many people is because it's not just about D&D. In D&D style heroic fantasy in general (LotR, of course, but also recent stuff for the newer generations like Dragon Age) dwarves are often not wizards, or even capable of being such. It's a longstanding tradition in many popular franchises.

Still a rare bird and in 5E they lack an intelligence bonus so out side of rolled stats I do not expect to see to many of them.

No, dwarves have been arcane casters for a long time now in D&D and in most video games with them in it, Dragon Age is about the only major rpg I know of where dwarves are barred from using arcane magic.

It's never been against type for anyone playing a Norse dwarf wizard.

Yeah, before 3e.

Its against type in the untrained in armor carrying around a dusty old tome os spells type archtype.

But a mail clad warrior calling upon the runes carved into his axe, armor, and knuckle bones.... Never!

So, 5e is perfect for this in many ways.

Oh, it is still against type. There are some people who play dwarf wizards, or who have just forgotten about this aspect of the dwarf culture, but it's an option many DM's will actually disallow.
