News Digest: Snippets of Pathfinder 2nd Ed Teased at PaizoCon, Cyberpunk Red Starter Set Gets Releas

Grimmerspace is going off of celebrity power to a large extent — Wesley Snipes and Sean Astin are creative developers on the project (though Snipes seems absent in the Kickstarter info), and artists include Larry Elmore. Many might pick it up just to see what Kind of gaming material they come up...

Critical Role Watch Critical Role's Matt Mercer Play D&D With TV's Stephen Colbert!

I hope that, given his obvious enjoyment, that even if he doesn’t play games that are broadcast any more, that he doesn’t stop and decides to start some regular gaming - Hell, plenty of people even have lunch-hour games at work because it’s the best place for them to fit a game!

Starfinder Why Did Paizo Never Make A Pathfinder/Starfinder Magazine?

Yeah, the reason WotC gave up the magazine publishing in the first place was a desire to divest it completely, so they sold all that to Paizo along with the licensing contract. As to why Paizo didn’t continue a magazine, it was already not a great money-maker for them to produce in that format...

Best old-school dungeon crawl for 5e?

No, I think the monsters by and large did not play well with one another, but one of them (won’t spoil it) was trying to get them to work together. By and large, it was pretty much a monster apartment building where you could go from door to door with impunity, as originally written.

    Favourite D&D edition that’s not 5E

I voted 2E, but I like several for different reasons: - I said 2E because I ran two of my longest-running campaigns on it; it’s flexibility was such that I could pull in a lot of 1E material without throwing it out of whack, and I home-brewed that system the most by far. It was also the system...

    Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?

I can’t take credit for it, sadly — Stu Venable from Happy Jack’s RPG Podcast is friggin’ hilarious. :)

    Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?

“Can be?” Yes, absolutely. See everything from Dragonlance, to Sepulchrave’s Story Hour, here on these very forums. (I would argue Sepluchrave’s “Tales of Wyre” are an even purer form of that, since it arose directly from play.) “Is, as in always?” Absolutely not. Some games can be basically...

The Most Popular D&D Character Name Is "Bob"

And no Fannys, either — I’m disappointed. :-)

    D&D 5E (2014) [5E] Apparatus of Kwalish

But if he didn’t, it’s not about being chicken, perhaps they just don’t want to egg on a fight. Perhaps the unintended fowlness of meaning didn’t dawn on them, or they were just winging the comparison. ...But enough doodling about, puns can be corny if overused. We’re all crow-n ups, here...

Worlds of Design: Why Would Anyone Write a RPG?

To me, reasons #1 and #6 are the most valid reasons for doing so remaining; if you see a genuine unfilled need (which I’d argue your #5 also fits into #1) or sheerly for the creative-yearning Hell of it. In my younger days (as noted in the other “have you ever designed a standalone RPG” poll...

Have you ever written a standalone set of RPG rules?

When I was younger, I tried to make my own, a post-apocalyptic RPG in the tradition of Mad Max (this was in the 80s and well pre-Fallout influence.) I did not get very far past ability scores and basic combat before I realized I was re-creating D&D and stopped. :-) I have kit-bashed the hell out...

XGtE: are any of those flavor magic items any good?

I believe it used to be called “Curing hysteria.”

The Washington Post Weighs In On D&D!

Mike Mearls keeps pushing his “no bonus actions” idea here and there, but I’m worried it will leave WAAY too many corner-cases if it were to happen. Redesigning down to “move and action” only would mean a serious redesign task, I think. As it is, bonus action limits and the “manipulate” freebies...

The Washington Post Weighs In On D&D!

There had better be a good D&D movie soon, or I’ll be miffed. The pump is figuratively primed and ready, for goodness’ sake!

Have you ever written a standalone set of RPG rules?

Yeah, it’s like going to a forum devoted to classic roadsters and asking how many people have tried to restore one. :)

XGtE: are any of those flavor magic items any good?

The Hat of wizardry I consider to be pretty good - the ability to pull out ANY cantrip once per day in a pinch is pretty good. I know there’s a failure chance, but if you are a wizard, chances are your Arcana check is pretty good anyway.

Vecna v Acererak v Larloch? Who's The Most Powerful Lich?

I would have to say that this points to an interesting parallel. Though Vecna may well be more powerful than Larloch, Larloch is definitely wiser. Vecna makes all these cunning, yet aggressive, complex plans for domination, and though he frequently comes close, he always gets derailed or...
