Critical Role Critical Role Goes Independent From Thursday

I’d love to thank the Twitch subber who gifted me a one month subscription Tuesday, but there doesn’t seem to be a method on Twitch to send a private message — that was awesome of them! They have a pretty good community over there at crit role, generally speaking. However, even despite Relics...

Bringing 5e elements into Pathfinder to deconfuse players

We did this for our PF1 game and it went pretty well, but I would recommend to keep it low-level (cap the campaign to max 10th level or so) so that feat and spell interactions don’t get complex enough to cause major headaches. In fact, numbers fatigue caused my entire PF1 group to switch to...

Who's Multiclassing With Who? More D&D Beyond Stats!

Given that I've always played in 5e games with the default point buy, I don't think either of those have ever applied to me :) -- I'm ALWAYS loath to pass up an ability score increase -- it would be at least 16th level before my prime stat and my CON are maxed, anyway.

How Many RPG Books Do You Own?

Printed, probably about 100 - I have periodically purged over the years, donating to good friends especially for books I haven't cracked open in 5 years or more. Digitally, I literally have thousands and thousands -- collective worth however is quite different because a lot of them I've picked...

Do you roleplay in 1st or 3rd person - why?

This pretty much fits me as well. In my case, it's about 75%/25% first person/third person, I prefer first person, but there are times where either I'm at a loss for specific words (I suck at seducing NPCs, I got no game ;)) or intent needs to be clearer.

Who's Multiclassing With Who? More D&D Beyond Stats!

I'm actually surprised that the "dipping" doesn't go all the way to level 4 for most of these, stopping at level 3 so often; if you're going to level 3, in most cases might as well go to level 4, so as not to delay ability score increases/feats. Basically, if you only go to level 3, you're 3...

    Xanathar's Subclasses

So far, I've seen an ancestral guardian Barbarian, a Swashbuckler Rogue, A Hex blade warlock, and a Divine Soul Sorcerer. Of all of these, the Divine Soul was the most lackluster - but I think this has as much to do with the Sorcerer being slightly too short on spells known as anything. All...

    Who Playtested This Anyway?

This was actually an excellent example of how some companies make the mistake that open playtesting takes the place of QA, rather than supplementing QA.... I actually wish more companies did this, a "liner notes" if you will on the headspace of the designer, so that some of the more ambiguous...

    Roll20's 4M Accounts Hacked

I can’t speak to other countries, but I can confidently say that, if you live in the United States, some of your personally identifiable information (PII) has been released through a breach at least once in your lifetime, no matter how old you are. At the very least, multiple branches of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D movie, take note...

The first Guardians movie had several things going for it: -Strength of vision. Gunn and crew had a very strong idea for what came out, from the music, to the characterizations, to the humor. A movie with too many competing visions becomes a muddled mess or too formulaic, as in the case of half...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do I fake my character's death?

Why does it have to be a fake death? Re-reading raise dead and resurrection, unlike some earlier editions, it just says the soul must be “free and willing” but doesn’t say anything about what info the soul has about who is recalling it. If the group knows you are taking a break, just get your...

Larry Elmore On Composing The Companions Of The Lance Art

This has been one of my favorite pieces of art of all time - kind of a wistful piece showing all of the companions, still together and of similar mind, before circumstances forced them to separate and everything went to hell... With Raistlin having the night-blue bound Spellbook of...

New "Stranger Things" D&D Starter Set Announced

My 1st Edition gamma world set had some very interesting dice - filled in with black paint/ink from the factory, but made out of some kind of ultra-hard, kind of brittle plastic, almost slightly glossy. I’ve never seen any other dice like them in any other set - my moldvay basic and expert sets...

How Did I Become a Grognard?

It's funny because it's true.... :) I fished them out the other day just so I could see if it was true, and indeed, I have three dice left still from my Moldvay Basic box and my first edition Gamma World boxes... and most of the people I work with currently were born after 1985...

    Monster spawned by a typo

My first thought was a Cocodile - a chocolately swamp-dweller that tastes great in milk! Then again, the Fire Wolf could be a fun replacement for the Dire Wolf occasionally. Or perhaps you might luck out and encounter a Kind Flayer in that underdark cavern? Russ Morrissey's least favorite...

Where Have All the Gamers Gone?

Every once in a while, I bowl for company "team building" events - I hurt in all sorts of new places on my body that didn't hurt the day before. :) It's no 10K run or swim meet, mind you, but Respect given for just how physical that game is...
