D&D 5E (2014) Sudden changes to the party dynamic

Ugh. Halfling gunslinger. Hadn't even considered that. Practically eliminates the chance of a misfire.

    Cantrips and spellbooks

I'm toying with the idea of doing something similar to Pathfinder and change the "Known" cantrips to the number you can prepare per day (if you're a prepared caster). In such a case, a wizard would need to record cantrips into his spellbook as he learned them. (It's definitely not RAW in 5E...

D&D 5E (2014) Sudden changes to the party dynamic

While I haven't seen the Gunslinger in play at an actual table, I wouldn't worry too much about it outshining another character (unless you roll stats and the newbie rolled better). A lot of Percy's (the Gunslinger on Critical Role) ridiculous damage comes from a combination of super-high stats...

D&D 5E (2014) New member intro and first time DM discussion

Have a notepad for writing quick notes on during the game "Sir Worthington: dark hair, long face, member of the Queensguard, pompous bearing, deep/British voice" "Potion bottle with blue cap is actually Poison", etc and then after the session compile them into your more official notes (which...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM campaign disputes.

While there are variations in table etiquette from group to group I (and DMs I've played under) have always discussed the addition of new players with the group before doing so. As for the OP's situation, this is incredibly bad form (both the "new secret players" and the "So these guys totally...

    D&D 5E (2014) As a DM, can I just say, Screw Paladins :)

Back in my 2nd Ed Dragonlance game the Solamnic Knight of the Sword PC engaged in a duel with a death knight as part of his trials for becoming a Knight of the Rose. I would agree that it's definitely not a new phenomena brought on by 5E.

D&D 5E (2014) So Favored Soul is going to be Divine Soul Now?

Considering the number of people that complain about the lack of a spell-less ranger (when 4E was the only edition that had them by default) the answer is apparently "yes". Personally, I never cared for the Favored Soul in 3.5. I thought Pathfinder's Oracle was a much more interesting take on a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

While I'm good with allowing subterfuge to gain the drop on someone rather than Stealth in certain circumstances, I would never flat out decide someone drawing a weapon and attacking would automatically grant surprise like they're the Spanish Inquisition (or worse, allow them to act outside of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improvised actions in combat

I personally enjoy it when my players get creative. While it would get dull really quick if a player used the same "trick" over and over (like the sand in the eyes bit above) when someone is in the moment and decides to take advantage of the environment, I applaud it as DM. Especially since 5E...

    D&D 5E (2014) MultiClass Question Fighter- Ranger/Paladin

If he's willing to let you take the standard HPs, by all means take him up on it. Even if you were to roll 10s from here on out it would take you 4 levels before you'd get back to the standard HP total.

    D&D 5E (2014) Not dying?

It honestly all depends on the game and the players. There's no real "right" answer for this. Some people want the possibility of death around every corner, while others want to engage in an epic story where PC deaths only occur when fitting to the narrative. As others have said, there are...

    D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Ideas

The no rolling death saves until someone checks on you is a similar to a house rule I used back in 3.5: Once you drop into negatives, no one knows what your HP total is (of course, I had to keep track of all PC HP totals in order to implement this.) and the DM rolls stabilization dice for you...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you have a personal Players Handbook?

Back in the day I used to print out my house rules, the world map and world information, put them all in plastic sleeves and then place those into a three-ring binder that I left on the table during sessions. Nowadays I just use a Google Drive.

    D&D 5E (2014) MultiClass Question Fighter- Ranger/Paladin

Right. I'm not sure where the idea that multi-classing would solve the HP woes comes from. You only get max HPs at your first character level, not class level. It doesn't sound like a class issue, in any case. It's a rolling for HPs combined with really bad luck issue.

D&D 5E (2014) Does Anyone Use Hold Monster?

If you need to take someone alive Hold Person/Monster followed by physically restraining them (ropes, manacles, whatever) is generally the quickest way of doing so (short of a magic item like the Iron Bands mentioned above.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Cube of Force Conundrum

The point of the spell is there's no line of effect to anyone on the other side of the wall. It doesn't dispel existing effects (if it did, that would be specifically spelled out in the spell description.)

    D&D 5E (2014) MultiClass Question Fighter- Ranger/Paladin

Are you rolling for hit points? With a 16 Con, a fighter should have plenty (58 at 6th level) unless you're rolling and had a bad string of luck. (If you are rolling, maybe ask the DM about adding a line to the Tough feat that allows you to re-roll 1s and 2s for hit points.) Either way, I...

D&D 5E (2014) A change of perspective: From DM to Player

My group hasn't punished players by forcing them to start at low level since the early 90s. We'd rather everyone have fun and play an effective character than be forced to churn through a dozen characters before one manages to luck their way through a few battles and level up to be useful every...

D&D 5E (2014) A change of perspective: From DM to Player

Thing is you can't really be a "blackguard" from the very beginning. The Oath (and associated powers and behavioral restrictions) don't come online until level 3. Remember, the only official evil paladin we have in 5E is the Oathbreaker. Up until a paladin takes an Oath at level 3, they don't...

D&D 5E (2014) A change of perspective: From DM to Player

See, I figure its the DM's game, not mine. I'll pipe in and say "I think RAW is meant to be this" but don't generally make a big thing about it. The only time I stood my ground was when the DM was going to nearly TPK us by ruling Cloudkill hits you twice before you can react to it (he was ruling...
