D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse in Greyhawk

I haven't read it /that/ carefully, but I think you'll be fine. The book has a lot of factoids about Forgotten Realms: some information about the various cities and man-made features, and some stuff about the history of the area. AFAICT none of that's really necessary for the campaign. You...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

The tables contain static values -- I found it easier to just copy-paste the new values over, although that's not the best practice :p. The Melee Comparisons sheets have the formulas. The reason the S&B ranger is only slightly behind is because casting Hunter's Mark consumes the bonus action...

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Princes of the Apocalypse encounters and magic items

Ran some numbers real fast. A party probably averages around 21.8 damage at level 1 or 2, not counting Action Surge. Oreioth's level 3 spell slots deal 18 (Ray of Sickness), 14 (Magic Missiles), or 10.5 (Vampiric Touch). His level 2 spell slots deal 13.5 (Ray of Sickness) or 10.5 (Magic...

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Princes of the Apocalypse encounters and magic items

Yea, looks like the mini-dungeon has enough monsters to get players to Level 2, or close to it. They might be fine if you let them level up right before hitting Oreioth. Still, does anyone know why he has 6d8 HP? Shouldn't he have 6d6 as a Wizard? I might drop his HP down to 21 by reducing...

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Princes of the Apocalypse encounters and magic items

I'm a bit worried about Oreioth because the encounters leading up to him seem pretty easy. Once the players get to Oreioth, one of them will probably hit the ground every turn. I don't think there's time to assess the danger of the fight before players go down.

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Princes of the Apocalypse encounters and magic items

Haven't looked too deeply at the main campaign yet, but I have two questions about the low-level stuff. First, Oreioth, who players might stumble across at level 1, is a level 6 Wizard. Even assuming his 3rd level spells slots are used up, a level 2 Magic Missiles deals 12 damage. Oreioth also...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

Fixed the Barbarian's level 15 %EFF, it was too high for some reason (everything else was fine). I didn't know how to handle Diamond Soul or Slippery Mind so I just stuck it in the list of unmodeled abilities. Whoops you're right :). I don't want to get into ranged DPS here because DPR*RIS...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

I called out the utility abilities which did not factor into my analysis and considered them in my commentary. For example, I think the Rogue is fine despite the gap in combat effectiveness because of their utility. I get worried when a class without a lot of utility falls far short of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

Big updates to the Ranger and Monk! It turns out a Sword & Board Ranger deals almost the same damage as a TWF Ranger with a much larger boost to their durability. With that switch, it seems like Rangers are in line with Rogues after level 11. (ETA: I still think Rangers are clunky though.)...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

Yup. I messed up the fact that Ki recharges after a short rest. Huge changes incoming for the Monk.

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

Ability Score Increase + Second Wind. The Fighter 15 has 182.5 HP whereas the Paladin 15 has 157 HP (Lay on Hands HP divided by 3 because it's a per long rest power). If you don't mind me asking, what are the things which this analysis leaves out in your opinion? :)

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

By the way, someone on Reddit asked me to quickly look at Fighters vs. Wizards. This is obviously really hard! So I just looked at DPR. Main findings: over 21 rounds, the Fighter's DPR after miss chance is about the same as the Wizard's DPR before accounting for miss chance! I don't think...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

I agree with you here :). I'd prefer Rangers as alternate Fighters, but I don't think they can get there with only a simple set of houserules.

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

UPDATED: Monk and Ranger houserules removed due to better information. For those who are more concerned and willing to tinker, I’ve come up with some simple houserules which narrow the gap. These houserules are NOT playtested so use them at your own risk! Many of you looked at the numbers...

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

EDIT: Big changes for Rangers and Monks! I compare the melee effectiveness of different classes in the spirit of Stalker0’s work. I look at all non-full spellcasting classes in melee combat at levels 3, 7, 11, and 15. I’m mainly interested in how these classes perform for non-optimizers, so I...

    Brewing Up Sorcerer Origins

At one point I created the Arcane Origin. The idea was to give the Sorcerer more options, and some more arcane points to use those options, rather than adding some random class features. Arcane Origin Your innate abilities comes from a deep connection with the fabric of magic. You may have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Barb vs Fighter vs Monk..vs Paladin!

Can you run this with a Ranger? :)

D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer spell list - why so short?

I proposed this Sorcerous Origin a while back: It looks like a lot, but only the extra sorcery points are raw power. The rest is extra flexibility.

    D&D 5E (2014) How do royalty die in D&D?

That's a lot of responses :). Unfortunately I wasn't so clear: I don't care that they stay dead (I can find plenty of excuses for that), but getting them dead in the first place with a young-ish heir is the problem (so not dying of old age). Still a lot of good discussion though, and there are...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do royalty die in D&D?

I'm thinking of starting a campaign around a succession crisis. Basically, the king and queen die and the young heir is challenged by an uncle for the throne. I'm having trouble coming up with ways to kill off the king and queen who have access to mid-level clerics. I was hoping some of you...
