Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

Oh hey sir, what's your spell? sir = I iz stronk ah, good spell. good spell... I dunno where you were going with all that, but for some reason I totally get ya. Diversity of tactical combat/drama can drive needs for different spells for sure. How far "Mind control" and "super strong"...

What is your favorite spell for Urban magic?

Deadlands (classic) has this too. Touch o' Death. "This hex allows a hexslinger to magically squeeze some poor sod’s heart and give him an old-fashioned heart attack..." I love "old-fashioned" like.... what the new way? hehehe

What is your favorite spell for Urban magic?

I like that! Kinda goes along with a "EMP" kinda spell. Render computers and other electronic devices inert

What is your favorite spell for Urban magic?

Urban magic in this context means "a setting of modern era" which can be in about the past 100 years to to today - and set in the real world. I know there are others, but I keeping this narrow for now... What is your favorite spell? What system did it come from? Why was it so much fun to...

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

This brings up an interesting sub question to my original one = Adventurers vs Telenovelaists (That is to say, go on a quest folks - versus - stay in one spot and suffer drama folks) (D&D playloops versus Mage the Awakening perhaps) Does either type need/benefit form Dynamic spells more or...

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

What if each "faction" or "School" or whatevs... only had their one or two "special" spells? Would it be a fun game of steal the spell? Hide your own special spells? other?

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

So what about having a 'catalog' of spells. But under each spell is a list of modifications the character can perform with that spell? It makes each spell longer and more fussy. But it prevents the overly vaguesauce of "pick a concept + powertier and roll with modifiers and just guess at...

    Reinventing the Wheel

Yeah, I guess I got off on a tangent when trying think of why hobbyists try to fix things. I still kinda think its the same reasons, just on a more mish mash scale. because some hobbyists have fixed things in a way that was better than the same kinda fix before.

    Reinventing the Wheel

imho.... They are not re-inventing the same thing, they are refining on what came before. D&D has done this to its self as much as anyone else, if not more. From 1e to 2e to 3e to 4e to 5e = there are marked and Large changes to an otherwise same system (compared to how little GURPS or...

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

Would everyone be willing to have Rote spells, a smaller list of Rote spells, but the ones that are provided are really punchy and interesting? Or would you rather have all of the core Rote spells (attack, shield, strength, teleport, etc etc etc), at the cost of each spell being more generic in...

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

So most RPGs seem to use "Rotes". In my question here a Rote is a spell that is self contained rule that fits into the larger overall game system. A good example of this is D&D, such as Fireball spell. For the most part, all of what you need to cast Fireball in D&D is in the Fireball spell rule...

Has anyone run West Marches style Apocalypse World?

I feel like this game works very well for West Marches, especially for the Hard Holder and the vehicle rules for travel. Has anyone run a totally not Mad Max, Apocalypse World as a West Marches campaign? How did it go? Any lessons learned you can impart?

Crunchy Tactical RPG like 4e/pf2e but for Urban Fantasy?

I suggest Achtung! Cthulhu (link) Modern setting stuff (cars, guns, phones, etc) Urban setting (rules for fighting in close quarters, battlefields) Tactical play (uses battle maps, figurine placement, special moves tactics) Lots of spells (themed a bit horror, but that can be tweaked if you...

    Not DnD | Chasing Adventure

Thanks for sharing this! I missed the KS, but still look forward to it coming out. I bought into the crowdfund for Stonetop a while back (which is an evolution of Freebooters on the Frontier pbta, which its self seems a evolution on Dungeon World. ) I will be curious as to how Chasing...

How Accommodating to Player Preferences Should the GM Be?

I love this reply so much. Can we pin this to the top of every RPG book? Also, here is a very useful tool for all game systems = C.A.T.S (link) It gives everyone a chance to talk ahead of time about what they want out of the game, note it down and use it as guidelines moving forward each...

    My Dread Experience

I run Dread at conventions. I have run it for games of... Dread the Orks! WAAAAGH!! 12 players, all Orks. Have to unite the tribes, create a warband, elect (fight) a Warboss, and start a WAAAGH!! then go attack the Imperium. = It was so painfully fun and bonkers I still think about it...

Blades in the Dark (& hacks) - Replacing Effect Dice

This is gonna be your road-bump right here. Changing Position and Effect from static numerical values to D6's = breaks the entire GM play system. As those Effects and Positions are the basis for Tier and and Gear and many more things that are mechanically built around that static value...

How Many Spells Does a Wizard Need?

This is such a great question. :) IMHO.... "As many as the plot needs". I have run almost every system ever made. And the 100% consistent thing I notice about any game with magic/psionics/mystic etc = The players use what the challenges call for No more No less From Mage to D&D to...

    Poll: Heavily Non-Canon Star Wars

Depends. I like the original Trilogy (minus Ewoks). Here is an Star Wars RPG PBTA hack (free link) which allows you to run Star Wars your way, using just the core concepts. And I think this makes the most sense. Let people pick and choose the lore/canon they want.
