In AD&D (2e) we had an all elf and all dwarf campaigns. Eventually they just acted like humans with pointy ears or short humans. I think that's when I stopped DMing AD&D (2e) entirely.

If your definition of flashy is all spells of Evocation and Conjuration schools then by all means ban them. I don't it as having any effect on class balance as it stands. Wiz/sorcs are weak even with Evocation and Conjuration so banning them makes no difference. Clerics will of course overpower...
