    The Magic of Eragon

While only those that have read Eragon will get this comment fully, I think the rest will get the jist of what I'm asking; So I wondered how to do magic in D&D akin to how it is wielded and used in Eragon. In the book it is much more kinetic, with it being wielded, countered, reinforced with...

"What" you are versus "who" you are.

So one needs to be playing Exalted to get in depth with their role-playing? From my experience it comes down to the players you got together. To some degree the DM/GM can prod those players that are on the fence between playing a "what" and a "who" to go one way or the other (in my case, the...

Looking for a good mapping program.

AutoREALM - best bang for the buck. Well, actually it's free, but I find it better than anything else I've worked with.

What do Enworlders do in real life?

Digital Cartographer for an environmental consulting company. You'd think that would be all kinds of good for tabletop RPGs too, but unfortunately the GIS/GPS software really only applies to actual locations. I'm better off using AutoRealm for my maps than the multi-thousand dollar mappins...

    Looking for Character Sheet Maker

Well, I broke down and used Word. I had to fight to fit the tables like I wanted, and it gave me some problems. But I can't complain, I'm really happy with the results. What do you guys think?

    Looking for Character Sheet Maker

I'm trying to do something very custom. So I guess from scratch although if there was a pre-made sheet that allowed customization - changing the titles of sections, moving blocks around, adding and removing blocks, etc, then that would work also.

    Looking for Character Sheet Maker

Anyone out there know of a Character Sheet Maker? I tried doing a custom sheet to better serve Elements of Magic, but on Excel or Word it looks cheese-on-cheese. Any java or flash based or other some such programs out there to help a fella' make a half decent looking custom character sheet? :heh:

Is your D&D campaign a game or a story?

Methinks Mallus hit the proverbial nail on the head here. Let's look at this again... it all fits... The Shaman is a Storyteller in the closet

Is your D&D campaign a game or a story?

So it seems like it comes down to the players that you have. I've had my share of players who were really into the game aspect - the battles and getting items to help with future level progression, dungeon crawlin' fools and all - but not at all interested in the overall campaign, NPCs, where...

Is your D&D campaign a game or a story?

AMEN! And Umbran, agree with you 100%. Shaman, there really isn't a need to go as far as calling gm's that like to tell a story "self-aggrandizing". That's how some people play the game. My wife would simply not play in a game like what you describe. She is into a established, long term...

Is your D&D campaign a game or a story?

To me the game elements are just the vehicle for the heart of the thing, the story. 8 Story, 2 Game. Be it D&D, GURPS, Exalted, or whatever game system, the important thing to me is the story. I got no beef with fudging dice and bending rules for the sake of the story.

    How do you discribe combat?

I always advocate for more narrative rather than less, but some level of description, as multiple posts have shown on this thread, is pretty standard. For me I gauge how much description I'm going to use by how crucial the battle is. If its 2 - 3 really nasty bad guys, or the big lich type or...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Yeah apparently I was using what I thought was general terminology which in reality has some very specific meaning, at least going by the discourse in the glossary at the Forge. It'll take me a bit to crunch through the glossary definitions of things but all terms I was using in my arguments...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

I think this is part of why I'm having such a hard time expressing my views properly, and arguing with folks who actually seem to be of the same mind. Its the using of terminology that has subjective defenitions. Narrative style, hack'n'slash, even the core term of role-playing all have...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Amen Brother And that's why I'm trying to advocate the narrative style. Because I can't think of a way to interject a character's individuality without using some descriptors above and beyond "I hit him" " I attack" "I take a 5ft step and wait to get my att of opp", etc. The litmus test is if...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Thank you much. I'll admit, I was venting a bit there at the very first. I was genuinely frustrated with players that do the "I attack" "what's the AC" "x dmg", etc, and think that is the end all be all of an RPG. That extra verbage and descriptions delay more combats or slow the game down. That...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Its not that I'm not down with it John. They are welcome to do that and I surely don't fault them. Its if they call that role-playing that I take issue. Because to me, that's not. By contrast: Aaron, not sure why you're upset here. You are describing a very engaging and fun narrative style...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Okay, since Mark has mentioned this, a point that has been mentioned for about the upteenth time, I think I'll address it directly. This idea of different gaming stlyes - let me get to the root of my original post. We are talking about Role-Playing Games, not general games. If there is a group...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Point taken Shadowslayer. Fullest was not the right word since there are no absolutes and it can't really be quantified. I just meant you can get a heck of a lot more out of that core book if you look and play beyond the mechanics. I've had my share - heck, most of the games I've been a part of...

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

Nice choice to quote from Monte's article. And indeed in another ten years, or heck, maybe another year I'll have changed my mind on the subject due to experience or comments like the above, or the one by the Auld Grump (good to see you take some time off from the WorldWerks boards ;) )...
