that's very true, but a good history/ sociology/ philosophy book could solve the problem and make you a better person, too (if you understand history better, you understand the world around you better, too.) i think anybody has something to learn in this respect, so don't take my comment as...

you know, the trick is making it logical. if you have, say, flying machines in your late ancient world setting, so be it. but then: 1. are they available to some people, most people, everyone? and why? 2. given the availability of such equipment, how would the world change? even something so...

if you concentrate on macro historical events, chances are that you might feel like you were wearing a straight-jacket. if, on the other hand, you use those event as background, and give to your character other goals than, say, stopping napoleon from invading russia, chances are you will be much...

give it a try and see where you stand. i like it because sometimes it forces you to come up with interesting background ideas to justify an otherwise wacky character, but i agree that sometimes, or in certain campaigns, it shouldn't be used.

i vote for classes, too. i can't stand the fat that there are hundreds and hundreds of feats out there
