Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

Mutant and Mastermind has "bounded accuracy" per level, some sort of. Your attack (or damage) can't be higher than your level, no matter of what, ever. So if a "hulk-like" PC is level 10, his attack is 10, period. Later editions allowed for a small grade of freedom (some characters might have...

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

There are D&D rules to play with laser guns too, or to play dragons, or classless versions. That doesn't mean it's standard. To fit the desires of those who aren't "holding the line" ;) I fully understand that you are part of a (minority??) who is intentionally being vocal against what you...

    Blue Dragons: Sand or Sea

So you ask for a retcon removal of Bronze Dragons' breath?

    Blue Dragons: Sand or Sea

Blue dragons should be related to Magic, just like brown is tied to Time. Everybody knows that since World of Warcraft launch :p

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

In some games, like Nobilis, the PC are actually required to be gods. For standard D&D, though, even if gaining god status is a feasible and traditional goal, when it's achieved, the game ends for that character. Some homebrew D&D campaings might work different, but some other hombebrew...

    D&D 5E (2014) Everything aboot 5E looks boring.

They should really sell the PDF. That will cover your bases.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

So "god" tag does not fit, because PC can't be gods?:erm: Not all of them should have hard time hitting things. A dwarven fighter in ironclad armor might not be the nimblest thing out-there, but they should have a very good ratio. I think some games (like DC heroes or Marvel FASERIP system) got...

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

That's why a said "repeatedly" Survive a poisoning, and survive a galloon of poisoning are different things

Stuff you don't have a problem with, but will never use

this is a manriki/kusari-fundo. The D&D version has a lot more spikes, just like the standard D&D longsword picture is oversized and has a lot of spikes and curves too, and females wear bikini chaimails and evil kinghts wear impossible-to-don plate. But the weapon itself exists, sort of.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

I thought liberal use of game tags and labels were "wrong" for 3e style. Why is it different to tag a "clumsy" quality to the ogre, so it fits story, than tagging a "minion" label to the kobold or a "solo" tag to the Gelatinous Cube, so they fit in the story? :erm:

    D&D 5E (2014) Changes in Interpretation

Of all the 4e criticism, this one is by far the truest and fairest. People might discuse forever about AEDU, Vancian, or healing surges, which at the end of the day, it's a matter of tastes. The way it was marketed, was a horrible failure.

Have you played Runequest? The same difference than between spirit magic and sorcery.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

It's just a matter of taste. It depends on if you want *system* verosimilitude, or *story* verosimilitude. Let's take an ogre as an example. Story wise, I might want my ogre to be a sluggish, bad fighter that swing and miss a lot, with a relatively high damage when he luckily connects. In a 4e...

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

The only reason you (or anyone) could interpret hit points as a non-dissociative rule, is because they willingly chosed to blind themselves to the issue. There's no way you can explain how a high level mortal fighter can jump from a 20 floor building repeatedly and not dying. Or how he can...

The Stapled Parrot and Other Revered Genre Tropes for Thug Rogues

That's why they went the "+2 allies" instead of "1 ally" route. You need one extra parrot :p, but you can save a lot of time while people shift and do 5' steps and count squares to get to a flanking position without OA, while being slightly harder to achieve than 2vs1

Wo only need the druid class!

Pathfinder went a similar route, only slightly more detailed. You can gain up to +X to stats with a given form, it doesn't matter which "skin" it has. You can gain up to Y feats or Ex features, limited by the spell/Class skill. This solved most of the problems with wildshaping being...

    Wildshape

Not only that, but they gained the animal stats. So if you choose a dire bear, you sudenly gain +16 to STR and +8 CON. That makes the balance jump off the window, because a Barbarian gains +4 STR and CON with rage, and the druid can cast firestorm, call lightning, barkskin and regeneration.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

The question is not if they are created BY average people, but FOR average people. I don't want my computer operative system built by average people. I want it to be built by the top of the top of Sillicon Valley. I'd preffer that being a software engineer is not a prerrequiste to use it, though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Everything aboot 5E looks boring.

I didn't say his point is invalid. I said this game is not his cup of tea, so he should play any other, not that his taste for any other isn't valid. In the past, we (as a community) tried to convince "the other side" that they were wrong not liking "our" edition of choice. We've learned. So...

The Stapled Parrot and Other Revered Genre Tropes for Thug Rogues

I think this part of the post is serious. If so, I'd like to point that this is not the reason. The real reason, is that they want to make the game playable without a grid. "flanking" requires a grid, and a certain position on it. While the thug tactics require only relative positioning...
