How to do a doomed, "Halo Reach" type game?

One thing you can do, if the PC's understand that the campaign is basically unwinnable, is to shift the goalposts a bit. Maybe their goal, when they realize they can't beat the ultimate bad guy, is to minimize the damage dealt, or possibly hit him hard enough that he can be taken out at a later...

On the brand VS the game...

The problem isn't the statement itself, it's the fact that people feel very passionate about their edition preferences, coupled with that statement. Imagine the same statement made in other contexts of things people feel passionately about. "IMHO religion X isn't a religion to me." "I just...

Player wants to be a Lich

There's an ED in Arcane Power called Archlich that turns you into a true lich by the time you're done. He should be thinking about an ED to begin with, and it's likely a good fit for him.

I'm pissed off with Wizards of the Coast

Mike Mearls ruined putting out books. Mike Mearls also ruined not putting out books.

    Dancey v. Mearls?

So if it's Dancey v. Mearls, which one is Mel Gibson and which is Master Blaster?

When Worlds Collide ... Different Play Styles and Gamer Rage

You've also got enough people in the game that even if talking it out won't fix the problems, you can split the group into two. I don't know what kind of time your schedule has for such a thing, but it may be an elegant option to a difficult situation.

I'm pissed off with Wizards of the Coast

It's this exact reason that I'm so excited about Heroes of Shadow, or whatever it's being called. If the major developers have more time to work with, it may be an exceptional product.

Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

Also with Palladium in 2006. Game companies can survive hard times.

And if racial bonuses didn't matter?

Not necessary by any means. I've seen characters with a 16 in their principal stat, and they do fine. Like it's been said before, a single +1 to hit and damage really doesn't get noticed in the long run.

    D&D 4E WotC's 4E Setting approach - was it a mistake?

I'm with Obryn on this. If I like a setting so much that I want to read the gaps being filled in instead of filling them in myself, I'd rather read novels.

What other Essentialized classes do you want?

I'd ideally like Bladesinger to just be a build of Swordmage with Charisma as a secondary stat, but it's looking like that's unlikely.

Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

Not to mention that Demonomicon and Monster Manual 3 were both excellent. The fact that the Monster Manuals keep getting better as their number increases is a wonderful change from last edition.

Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

I think the biggest argument against Ryan's views is the state of the industry today, compared to the state of every other niche industry during hard economic times. Everybody is suffering, but a year and a half after his comments about a death spiral, guess what's still around. People have...

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

I'll both agree and disagree on various points. I do agree that 4e is a strong variation over the designs of 3e, in many regards, design philosophy being chiefly among them. 3e used a cohesive, integrated design. All the parts worked together to form a giant clock of a game, which the more...

Rotating area bursts to be off-grid

If you really want a changeup from the grid and square fireballs, here's a radical concept. Don't use a battlemat at all. Use a large dry-erase board, and give every player a tape measure. Make some circular templates that are 3, 5 and 7 inches in diameter for burst 1, 2 or 3, and change...

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

I still maintain that 4e and previous editions aren't as fundamentally different as people make them out to be. Most of 4th edition can be seen by late 3.5, and bringing a player from one to the other isn't that difficult. When it comes to converting adventures, the only thing that makes it...

    Post-Campaign Exhaustion

So, I finished a fairly long-running campaign tonight, and I'm noticing something that I haven't before. I, personally, am exhausted. We wrapped up a long story, the good guys won (barely) and saved the world. I can barely think straight and feel like a weight has been lifted from my...
