    New previews!!!

I've been dealing with Savage Worlds for a while, and the current edition of that game does the digest-sized paperbacks. They can hold up well, but you need to treat them well. If you're the type of person who cracks the spines in paperbacks, be prepared to have your books fall apart. If...

    D&D Comic hits stores today!

It means "Retailer Incentive," It's a rare, variant cover that comes on in every ten, 25, 50, 100 or however many comics the store orders. It's a gimmick that comic book publishers use to sell more units.

    Homebrewed (Solo) Monsters vs Stun

Here's an idea for a monster that's mad, possessed, or otherwise "of two minds." Part of the creature is holding back the wave of energy/evil portal/horrible thing that's about to happen. Every round, if the monster has a minor action available, the monster spends a Minor action to keep the...

    Drizzt Movie?

As much as I loathe Drizzt, I'd love to see a well-done movie of him. There's enough action to make for a decent summer popcorn movie, and it would get more people into D&D. And it can't be worse than the first D&D movie.

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

This means the stat bonuses are in line for Fey pact warlocks. This makes me happy.

    Collected Encounter Design Tips

Very good point, and one that is similar enough to my rule to be incorporated. How about: Avoid using multiple monsters that cause status effects that reduce player damage output or actions. Examples include the Dazed, Stunned and Weakened conditions, as well as the Insubstantial or...

Minions & PC Powers that have auto damage

It's a step in the right direction, but throwing a Solo Soldier of level n + 4 is still a grind-fest. It's better, don't get me wrong, but still bad.

    Collected Encounter Design Tips

As a first suggestion, I would like to propose a pitfall that I learned early on: Avoid multiple monsters that reduce damage dealt. One of the first adventures I ran involved an encounter with three wraiths and two corruption corpses. The entire party spent most of the encounter Weakened, and...

    Collected Encounter Design Tips

So, 4th edition has been out for over two years now, and with Essentials on the horizon and a horde of new players about to enter the game (hopefully), I believe the experienced DM's of EnWorld should pool their resources to compile a list of simple encounter building tips to help out DM's new...

Minions & PC Powers that have auto damage

That stands to reason. Minions compared to soldiers wind up being the same problem in a completely different way. Anytime you use any monsters whose levels greatly differ from the party can lead to wonkiness, just minions and soldiers have a smaller margin for this.

    D&D Comic hits stores today!

Nothing like starting with the best to screw up your standards. If you want some good further reading, check out V for Vendetta (better than the movie, and that's saying something), Transmetropolotan (A personal favorite), Y The Last Man, and of course Sandman. For the super-hero bent, I'd...

    D&D Comic hits stores today!

That's the problem with comics as a medium for storytelling. The page count is so limited, it's hard to get good pacing. Some of the greats are able to work with it, but most of the time the plots are a bit disjointed, cliched and rushed. Mind you, that's never stopped me from loving the hell...

    D&D 4E 4E Races, Post-Essentials: Flexibility, You Say?

I saw a video on the History Channel once about a group of guys who got so good at throwing dice, they managed to rig craps tables out of nothing but skill. It's crazy hard, but possible. As to the oblong dice, if you just make every player use 5d20's and rotate them, you've effectively...

    D&D 4E 4E No Focus

It also codified and defined what the encounter is. Most of the big criticisms leveled towards 4e in this regard ignore the very large sections in the DMGs about building encounters that don't involve combat, and the ongoing work to make skill challenges something amazing. 4e is all about the...

Minions & PC Powers that have auto damage

Well, it kinda sucks to be a minion. I you don't want to die with the rest of the droves, take off your red shirt and get a name.

Alternative: Girls (females) in D&D/ Roleplaying

And these both pale in comparison to the downed airplane exploding on the highway that is problems with sexism elsewhere in the world. Take a look at the controversial TIME magazine cover that came out recently if you want a real example of horrendous problems with women's rights in the world...

Man, Lords of Madness are looking awesome!!

It makes me wonder. If so many people played that dragonborn paladin, how many people abandoned the half-elf cleric?
