Slaying the greatest sacred cow: E-D&D

The ongoing rules updates are fixes to details, generally to clarify or tone-down powers. They're not the kind of stuff people change when "making the game their own," and they're not the kind of thing most people would notice. Early revisions to Stealth and skill challenges excepted.

Mad King's Banquet 4e: To Bresk via water?

I'm on the ENWorld subscription plan, so I haven't seen this adventure yet, but what you're talking about seems pretty awesome. Don't give up yet. I might want to steal it.

WotBS Errata for WotBS 4e: Perceived or Otherwise

The encounter budget for the White Wyrms encounter is listed incorrectly. It's actually 1075, not 1200. This error contributed to a TPK in progress for my group, because it caused me to add too many monsters when scaling the encounter for 6 players.

Truename's DM commentary on Scouring of Gate Pass

Session 3 (Scenes 2-3, 2-4, and 2-5) Well, that was a surprise. I expected this session to be fairly uneventful. After last session's intrigue-heavy (and somewhat poorly-paced) content, I thought some nice, unambiguous beat-downs would be fun for the players without being a lot of work for me...

What a great storytelling DM looks like

I remember that module! Never got a chance to run it, but man, it looked awesome. (Why don't we get modules like that anymore?) Instead, I ran "Old Man Katan and His Mushroom Band"... twice. :o

    Maps and Minis

Fiery Dragon sells a bunch of other counter packs, including their "Counter Collection Digital" series which is a very good deal. That's what I use, supplemented with the occasional Google image search. Once I have the token images picked out, I print them onto cardstock, paste them onto...

Tell me more about Larion (SPOILERS)

My group has a druid that can run 30 squares in one turn when he action-points. :) Plus I introduced a new character (an assassin) by having him attack Larion, which slowed him down. Then the Goliath Barbarian action-pointed up the wall after Larion, yanked him off the wall, and pinned him, with...

    Wealth Per Level Guidelines?

Assuming they've found all the ninth-level treasure, they should have 9 +2 items, 3 +1 items, and 3-12 nonplussed items. The plussed items should be evenly distributed so that everyone has a magic weapon/implement, magic armor, and magic neck-slot item. If they have little cash, they should have...

    Wealth Per Level Guidelines?

Three answers, in order of increasing complexity and accuracy: 1- Compare their "big 3" (weapon/implement, armor, neck) plusses to the DMG2 inherent bonus rules. 2- Compare their "big 3" plusses to their level as described below. 3- Use the magic item wealth by level table I posted below. 1...

    Monster knowledge handouts

That's how our game works, too. The character with the knowledge roll gets the handout, which represents in-world knowledge using player terminology, and then the player shares that with the others using his own words. I created these handouts because people weren't making knowledge rolls and I...

Our campaign kicks off on Saturday!

Two thugs. My group wiped the floor with this encounter, but Kathor and the dogs stayed outside, and Kathor called a retreat before they joined. Good luck! We just finished the Depository encounter and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

    Lack of Fast Heroes (rant)

I dunno. The elven druid in my game ran 30 squares in one round last session. Seemed pretty fast to me. :D (50 yards in 6 seconds--not quite world-record material, but he's only level 1. Give him time. B-))

Tell me more about Larion (SPOILERS)

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know. Now I'm free to do whatever I want with him.

    The New Red-Box...

I think everyone's vastly underestimating the amount of play value in two levels. According to the DMG, it takes about eight encounters to level up in 4e. Each encounter takes about one hour to play, and each game session has about an hour of ramp-up and wrap-up time. (This matches my...

Tell me more about Larion (SPOILERS)

Can anyone tell me more about Larion? There's hints that he has a Trillith, or some sort of powers, in the Gate Pass module. I seem to remember RangerWickett mentioning that he shows up again later. I'm doing some interesting stuff with Larion (as I mentioned in my DM Commentary thread) and I'd...

Truename's DM commentary on Scouring of Gate Pass

My players perked up when they heard about the Singing Chasm and started talking about using that to escape the city. What was your plan? Yep. :) From reading the campaign overview, I get the impression that the players get to choose their favorite nation in a future adventure. So I'm going to...

Truename's DM commentary on Scouring of Gate Pass

Session 2 (Scenes 2-1 and 2-2) This was a neat session. It dragged in parts, but the player's choices in this one should reverberate. They've also managed to go way off the rails of the plot. :) A bit of background: in prepping for this session, I decided that Larion was a misogynistic and...

Truename's DM commentary on Scouring of Gate Pass

Session 1 We played the first session last Tuesday. It was pretty much by the book. I did mix scenes 1-1 and 1-2 together using flashback vignettes--we started with the combat, and then after every round, I flashed back to the PCs meeting each other. There was a great moment (worked out in...

Truename's DM commentary on Scouring of Gate Pass

SPOILERS ahoy! (And players in my Portland game, stay out!) My players and I just started playing WotBS 4e last week and I'm already enjoying it a lot. I've liked Durn's and others' reports of their experiences, so I thought I'd share mine as well. I intend to focus more on what's worked well...

    Starting Campaign - Monk Class

And no offense meant to Kzach, I find reports of actual play experience more credible than theorycrafting, particularly when it comes to 4e.
