Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

Well, Skyrim starts you off with a blank slate, and you get better in something based on what you do. Keeping track of XP for each individual skill doesn't work well outside of a videogame.

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

Hrm...I think I know how to impliment it. Instead of spell slots, you get spell points - but points are not spent casting the spell, but rather spent preparing the spell. Say a 3rd level wizard has 5 spell points. She can spend them on 5 first level spells, 3 first levels spells and a second...

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

Guess they kinda stole your idea, then - classless/single class, 3 main stats (although their's is magic, stamina, health). Skyrim uses Perk (Feat/trait/talent) Trees for bonuses

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

I'm fine with a Vancian Wizard - wizards are the scientists of the magical world of D&D. Maybe for 5e an at-will spell attack and 2/3 encounter powers (chosen daily) with the rest of the spells as standard vancian dailies. Even Pathfinder has embraced 0-level spells as at-will minor castings...

Let's Speculate: WotC 2012 to 2014 Product Catalog

Isn't the turn-around time for when something is finished and sent off to the printers and when it hits shelves around 10 months? I read that somewhere...

    On magical items

As someone who came on during 3.5, that does make a game seem a little bit less D&D to me. +x to damage instead of BAB mentioned earlier does seem a reasonable compromise, though. I disagree with this. Prices have been used as part of the crafting mechanics, and are handy in specific...

    No More Reptiles with Boobs!

But..but..think of the furries... I don't really care, either way. I'm just not quite sure why dragonboobs are such a big deal. It always seemed like they were a race of half-dragon/half-humans that bred true. From a design standpoint, there are other ways to draw animals to indicate gender...

D&D 4E Musings: Pathfinder, 4E, and SRD editions

I assume that there will be ways to convert things from other editions to 5e. If 3.5 characters can be reasonably converted to 5e, then plenty of Pathfinder characters could be transfered over as well. With as modular as 5e is planning to be, much of Pathfinder may even be outright usable.

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

Is it bad that I think 5e should have an option for Either/Or/Both? Then people can play what they want to play. So long as different casting styles are balanced in actual play, I see no problem with both Vancian and non-vancian magic at the table. Then again, this is one reason (of several...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Pantheon

It would mirror real life mythology, though. War and fertility deities were always popular. Local gods of city-states usually had 3 or 4 of what D&D called domains, and war/protection was usually one of them (even if it wasn't their primary domain).

    Rethinking the Core Books

What of two books instead? Just a few monsters in the DMG to get people started, and a Player's Handbook. Monster Manuals then become optional splats. Which DMs would buy anyways. Because we like having lots and lots of monsters to try and kill the players with.

    No More Reptiles with Boobs!

And yet dragonboobs bother you. PG-13 vs. R rating. Plus, with so many parts being non-human (hands, head, feet) it is a quick identifier of gender that the common person can identify at a glance.

    No More Reptiles with Boobs!

But then they are missing feathers! Or at least feather-like structures.

    No More Reptiles with Boobs!

Yeah, but it makes conversations awkward when someone checks to see what gender you are like they do to alligators on the alligator farm.

    No More Reptiles with Boobs!

Personally, I find dragonborn to be closer to monotremes than lizards. Dragons in D&D for the last decade have been depicted more akin to mammal-like reptiles than true reptiles. They aren't theropods, although some traditional heraldry depicts them with feathers instead of leathery wings. As...

    Rethinking Skills

One of the (early) complaints about 4e was the lack of non-combat rules outside of skill checks. Skill challenges seemed like an ad-hoc method of trying to tie non-combat mechanics back in. Skill checks are all fine and dandy, but something that I've been thinking about is a non-combat talent...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think 5E needs less innovation.

Eh, you never know what will take off. Innovation would be taking the old and tweaking it, combinding it with other things that may be old (or not as old) to create something new. Invention outright creates something new. D&D/d20 and related products have had a lot of invention over the...

    Rethinking the Core Books

I get that the Players Handbook, DMG, and Monster Manual is traditional. But is this the best way to organize everything? Here is an idea of revamping core: Rules Compendium, Player's Handbook, and Dungeonmaster's Kit Rules Compendium: All the core rules, organized for easy learning and...

Vancian Casting and Rituals - A Solution

Not a bad idea. I'd maybe make rituals longer than a minute or 5 to cast, though. At least the more powerful ones. Maybe have it take as much time as crafting magical item?
