The WotC forums are making me feel old

Fair enough! Sorry for sounding snippy in my previous post. :heh:

The WotC forums are making me feel old

Umm, and that invalidates my experiences with WotC mod heavy-handedness how? :\

    WHFRP2 Sigmar's Heirs

Sigmar's Heirs is the best book on the Warhammer world I've read in ages. It's main weakness is the lack of maps (there should be good maps for each province of the Empire). But a great read!

The WotC forums are making me feel old

That's one serious problem with the WotC boards. Another is the simple immaturity posters there display in the face of disagreement or criticism. Another is the heavy-handedness of the mods, who will not tolerate criticism of WotC products, etc.

Charles Ryan (and others) out at WotC?

In this day of double-speak, PR people say '...affected by this change and are no longer with Wizards...' instead of '... were fired'. :\ I feel sorry for all those people. Charles Ryan, in particular, was always quite decent about posting here and keeping people informed of his perspective...

    Just wondering

IMO, a vastly superior 'in print' game that is also compatible with pre-3e D&D is 'Castles and Crusades'. It's both cheaper and a better system than Hackmaster. Plus Gygax is writing for it (producing his original Castle Greyhawk at long last, redubbed 'Castle Zagyg'). Hackmaster never...

    If you were to make a core d20 system . . .

    Hey, that's pretty cool! :)

    Drenai -> d20/OGL starting point?

I'd recommend True20. The magic system, in particular, looks appropriate for the Thirty and similar adepts (though you would likely to have to cut out a number of powers -- i.e. trim the list). Also, the role of 'conviction' looks great for a Drenai game.

Looking for a Well Developed City Setting

'Tredroy' is a city in the GURPS 'Banestorm' fantasy setting. The 'Tredroy' book describes a city on the border of three countries: one culture is Sunni Muslim, the other Shiite, and the third is Christian (who conquered a formerly Muslim country in a crusade). It is an interesting city...

The stats of Gygax and Ao

Nice, constructive remark. Why the snippy attitude? :\ A lot of those early Greyhawk names have goofy origins like this one (e.g. Drawmij, Leomund, etc.). The same goes for Blackmoor. But sure, let's act superior and make snarky comments about the naming practices of the folks who created...

Looking for a Well Developed City Setting

I still own this box set (it must be about 25 years old now!) and it's pretty fun. Another great OOP city is ICE's 'Minas Tirith' book by Graham Staplehurst. The city map is beautiful, and the book does a truly amazing job in describing the city. (However, given it's distinctive geography...

    D&D Rules Cyclopedia-any experiences

It is worth mentioning that there are some optional rules that address some of the concerns mentioned in this thread. For example, there is an optional rule to allow nonhumans progress up to 36th level. There is also an optional rule to let PCs survive when reduced to 0 hit points, allow...

Darkness & Dread vs. Heroes of Horror

As for the thread question, I liked 'Darkness and Dread' quite a bit when I read through it a year ago. It changes many things in the game, and for the better IMO. I considered using it at one point. But then I realised that WFRP just does a massively better job than 3e in terms of 'fantasy...

Darkness & Dread vs. Heroes of Horror

I think enough outside of RPGs (indeed, I think professionally). When it comes to my hobby, I'm all in favour of 'the easy way out'. The easier the better!

    Castles & Crusades: Player's Handbook

Let's not get too sidetracked discussing the merits of Kluge's review (you can comment on the review directly, if you want). There are FIVE reviews of the C&C PHB (including one by yours truly). Two give it 5/5, two give it 3/5, and one (mine) gives it 4/5. Look through all five reviews and...

    Castles & Crusades: Player's Handbook

There is a system in Castle Zagyg, and there will be a few systems in the CKG. For people not interested in those products, the 1e/2e AD&D system for multiclass PCs works just fine.

    Castles & Crusades: Player's Handbook

I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of C&C, as well as how it relates to pre-3e D&D and 3e D&D, in my review: RPGnet review: http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11008.phtml

    Wilderlands too old?

I think it's a great setting and a great product. It's the first campaign setting I've encountered in ages that makes me want to run it instead of running some homebrew. I love the 'fallen empires' and 'strange technology' feel to it. The setting is as close to a 'Hyboria' and 'Nehwon' in...

Green Ronin - True 20 System Review?

One noteworthy difference is that the revised version includes a section on 'backgrounds' (including some sample races, e.g. dwarfs, halflings, etc.).

I refuse to DM 3/3.5 past 7th level. How about you?

I hope that this is true (and think that it is). One of the things that appeals to me about True20 and C&C is the relative ease of high-level play. Having run two 3e campaigns in the past, I found the irritation in prep work to increase dramatically around levels 6-10. C&C has a slower...
