3e, DMs, and Inferred Player Power

Indeed. I agree with you 100 percent here, Henry. :) The DM/GM is the creative input that makes a table-top game far more satisfying than Everquest or World of Warcraft. 'Limiting' his/her power seems counter-productive. If you want to 'limit' the GM, why not just use a bloody computer? :\

Then why not come straight out and explain where Chris Pramas is wrong and you're right? :\

    The market dying?

Are these two statements compatible? Possibly, given the vagueness of the claim that 'D&D is doing fine' ('fine' relative to what?), and/or the possibility that D&D's relative health is independent of WotC's overall health.

3e, DMs, and Inferred Player Power

Well, for the record, I don't have a problem with saying 'no' to players. Yeah, this is another reason why I won't DM 3e anymore (I didn't mean to suggest that the reason I cited earlier was the only reason). My general point was that for RPGs to be successful, more needs to be done to...

    What is Gygaxian?

You should check out Gygax's new setting from TLG, "Castle Zagyg: Yggsburgh". It has all of these features (well, some of the names are still quirky, including of course 'Zagyg' and 'Yggsburgh'), and yet is still very 'Gygaxian'.

    The market dying?

My comment is somewhat tangential to the main topic of this thread, but I think that your comment here touches on one of the main reasons why I will not DM 3e anymore (having run two successful, year-long campaigns in the past). While a plethora of options for players is a good thing for...

    What is Gygaxian?

Agreed! It is a great Gygax book.

When do characters stop being tragic and are just depressing?

It's hard to give clear advice about something like this. But I think that making a PC attempt to commit suicide is pretty ... severe. I would never do that (except, perhaps, as a pre-game background element). Also keep in mind that Buffy, although it is full of drama and tragedy, is still a...

Does anyone have contact info for Roger E Moore?

That's such an injustice. :( Roger Moore's articles in Dragon greatly influenced the development of my views about gaming.

    The market dying?

There was an interesting thread over at RPG.net recently concerning the 'Shadow Community' of people who play OOP RPGs -- i.e. people who still play OD&D, AD&D (pre-3e), Runequest, MERP, etc. These people play PRGs on a semi-regular basis (maybe 1-2 a month, or less), are happy with the rules...

Seven Essential Books (change your answers)

To hell with the 'core 3'. I'd choose: Rules Cyclopedia D&D rules. Gaz 1 "Grand Duchy of Karameikos" C&C PHB C&C Monsters and Treasures Book The new Castle Zagyg book WFRP (2e) core rules WFRP (2e) bestiary 3 great games ... for loads of desert island fun!

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

I ordered CZ 'sight unseen' online -- I knew it would be excellent. It finally arrived today in the mail (albeit with a dinged corner, courtesy of the postal service) and it looks simply amazing! I can hardly wait to spend some hours this weekend reading through it. I even brought it to the...

    Low Magic Settings?

That's a useful distinction. For 'pseudo-historical low magic' I'd vote for Warhammer. For 'scary magic' I'd vote for Conan.

    Best Adventures of All Time

I am not sure what you are asking. UK4 and B10 are two separate modules, not two versions of the same module.

The Wilderlands boxed set. It's just amazing.

Thanks for that great overview, Melan. Between this, Blackmoor, and Castle Zagyg, it looks like some old school classics are finding a new audience. (And then the new Runequest next year ...)

    Best Adventures of All Time

In my opinion, the two best modules ever produced for D&D and AD&D are: B10 Night's Dark Terror and UK 4 When A Star Falls. (Interestingly, the UK AD&D author Graeme Morris had a hand in both modules. Also interesting, the two other authors of B10 -- Jim Bambra and Phil Gallagher -- went on to...
