So why don't reviews work? (as a marketing tool)

Interestingly, I know for a certainty that both of those companies provide review copies.

So why don't reviews work? (as a marketing tool)

I think RPG reviews can work quite well. I've had many people tell me specifically that they bought Game X based on one of my reviews, and some reviews are pushing 10000 impressions. The big problem is that for every hard working, legitimate reviewer there are three or so who are just trying...

Incompetent DM seeks help with powerful PC

Paladin/Rogue Gestalt? That's quite the attribute spread - what are his attributes and areas of focus like? What are the character's goals?

It's like the 'new' World of Darkness was for me.

That's one explanation, and there's no doubt that it became harder to find a 2E game after 3E just as will likely happen to 3E after 4E. Feeling like you 'wasted' money on all those books when the mechanics are no longer in demand isn't any fun. However, it could also be that a lot of folk...

Should movement be a skill? (integrating climb, jump..combo's)

That's an interesting idea, Jay! I think I would want some consistency in the movement so that I could easily plan my strategy before the dice hit the table, but I do like having the option of building faster (in a non-initiative sense) or slower characters. My only initial concern is that for...

It's like the 'new' World of Darkness was for me.

When White Wolf announced the end of the old World of Darkness everyone knew *something* was going to be promptly forthcoming from such a large publisher. Sure enough, we got an entirely new World of Darkness to follow it up. And, at first, I wasn't so keen on that. I really enjoyed the WoD...

D&D 4E Call a kender a kender? What should 4E "halflings" be called?

I've never had a great play experience with folk playing Kender. It's just too much chaos for my taste. I believe that just the name 'Kender' is likely to bring more chaos into my play experience, so I'm quite happy with leaving it 'Halfling' despite the changes.

"Glowing" review from a product not available yet?

Yeah, this isn't unusual. I published a review of Spirit of the Century before it shipped, for example. Maybe a button was just misclicked? It's easy enough to do in RPG.net's system, though I don't know how RPGnow reviews are setup.

I want an invading army from beyond this dimension. Tell me about it.

I just want to say that this has been an extremely productive thread and I have dozens of great ideas to sort through - thanks! It's picking that's hard ;)

    What's Captain Kirk's dump stat?

I didn't think the others were horrible. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

    AD&D Style Multilassing

In my play experience Gestalting is pretty huge. I'm not sure just being one level behind would work out. The Cleric/Wizard is a fine example. I know I would trade my latest spell level to also be able to cast entirely as a cleric. It's an even better deal than Mystic Theurge, by two levels...

I want an invading army from beyond this dimension. Tell me about it.

So, I want a short game where the focus is on an invading army from another dimension. I'm probably channeling a little bit of Feist's Riftwar Saga here, and I imagine the army coming in through great portals rent in the world. The thing is that I'm just not sure what would make for a cool...

    What's Captain Kirk's dump stat?

Ok, that's awesome, PC! Thanks for the morning smile :) I'd go with Dex - watching him leap around he always seems a little off. His Int is surprisingly high if you really watch the episodes - Kirk is often the character who figures out the solution to the current situation.

I would never have known this but for this post. I saw the subject (Update) and the first bit of text (Things shipped) and moved on. You may want to consider sending another email with a subject like (Your event locations are wrong).

    SWSE question

They're still a PC race, as they have been. IIRC species animosity is not stress in Saga. You could certainly incorporate that into your game, however.

    2008 Judge Selection Begins

While I'm far removed, I have been paying a fair bit of attention and would like to share two observations that may help your chances: 1. When voting opens mobolize your local roleplaying community. Post to mailing lists, stop by the local forum, and call up your buddies. It's not like...
