    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

I know my players would be rather upset if I didn't act as the gate keeper on what kind of actions are acceptable. If a player tried to do something that seemed far beyond a particular ability score, I'd certainly ask for an ability check or just say no. Be it a simple oversight or a...

    D&D 5E (2014) "The" Lich?

Vecna is a good pick, but Vecna was also in Ravenloft at one point. If we are talking about the FR, I'd pick Zhengyi, who is apparently more powerful than Szass Tam.

    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

I'd just declare the action invalid and remove it from play. That way the other players don't have to deal with a silly narrative.

D&D comes to Middle Earth (from Cubicle 7)

    this means non-bobble-headed-tiny-shoe halflings.

Check Out CURSE OF STRAHD'S Table of Contents!

All I'm saying is that IF that is the business model (as ZzarkLinux) describes, it's reprehensible. Of course, I'm not sure it is the model WotC is using. I just don't think WotC realizes how much of a hole they are leaving. Also, I don't think fans of these campaign worlds are asking...

Check Out CURSE OF STRAHD'S Table of Contents!

If that's what WotC is doing, it's reprehensible. Of course, they have yet to get me to buy any of their grand story adventures. I'll buy campaign settings but not this dribble.

Check Out CURSE OF STRAHD'S Table of Contents!

I don't think this is the case. They did the same thing with the FR and left us all wondering when they were going to update the campaign setting. Apparently, Chris was under the impression that he was already doing that via modules. IMO, if WotC published a book that included updated 5e...

Check Out CURSE OF STRAHD'S Table of Contents!

I'd expect nothing less from a module, but I didn't say it couldn't be a great adventure or that it wasn't playable. Ravenloft evolved into campaign setting since the original module was released decades ago. Releasing a single module in the same manner ignores all that. This module is...

Check Out CURSE OF STRAHD'S Table of Contents!

How does one run a Ravenloft module without campaign setting rules like Powers Checks, Horror and Madness rules, Modified spells, etc? Sadly, this is yet another module that I won't buy. I was expecting to see a few pages about Ravenloft in general, but that appears to be absent. Of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

I agree, I'd add that survival isn't a theme either for Ravenloft either. The dark powers would rather keep the party alive and use them to torment the domain lords.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

Barovia has certainly been detailed as medieval. In fact most domains have a real world anagram and technology level associated with it. Of course, I do recal a published 2e Ravenloft source book with a picture of a car... So at least WotC is being consistent in that regard. With that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic item attunement, like-dislike?

Attunement is nothing new, The Ring of Sustenance is an old item.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

After playing and running several Ravenloft modules, I've come to realize that the setting isn't about hopelessness as some are suggesting. The setting's modules are typically about mystery, suspense, a sense of imprisonment, redemption, and poetic justice. In fact, the party is usually the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

@pming Ravenloft is horror played in D&D mode. It's not to be played like an MMO or a movie and there is no expectation that characters will always be backed into a corner. It sounds like your version of horror isn't what Ravenloft is about anyway. I don't ever remember reading a...

D&D 5E (2014) Deal Breakers - Or woah, that is just too much

IMO, if you don't like the default lore don't use it. I'd rather have a set of lore that is the default than have none at all. Furthermore, traditional D&D lore shouldn't be something the game should just abandon, that would only upset the fans. I know I was rather upset with 4e for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

I'm not sure why you would say that Ravenloft can't be expanded upon. Ravenloft has many domains and the boarders of those domains often change. All you have to do is add in a new domain and you're done. The domain and its lord can come from any setting you so desire, even your own...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

Well I can think of one Ravenloft module in which the threat level is not known until the PCs are fighting for their life. The wolves just keep coming... In RL players have no right to expect that every fight is winnable. Sure 5e's default healing and resting mechanics might not work...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

I'm also surprised at this. Of course, I think it might be more related to their particular play style than an issue with the system. It's true that Ravenloft modules are focused on story, but so are many non-Ravenloft modules. The core difference is that there is usually a mystery of some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

A huge red dragon ? A horde of treasure....hmm I can think of at least two TSR Ravenloft modules that have just that. :) Makes me wonder if Strahd's Castle will still have that dragon....

    Monte Cook On Fumble Mechanics

It really depends on how many monsters the PCs are fighting. The more monsters (or # of attacks ) the more crits against the players. By the same logic, the more monsters the more fumbles in the players favour.
