    Essentials - calling a spade a spade

How you feel about Essentials being 4.5 depends on how you feel about errata. To use a software analogy: Is Windows XP (Service Pack 3) still Windows XP? D&D 4e is being continually patched like software and every little errata is like 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.3, but no matter how many patches you...

    The best dagger wielding class

No...it fixes some incredibly broken combos with casters. Isn't that nice of you!

Doing the Monster Math for the original MM

Even when "reset" I saw this change happen so I'd say they need to fix that. I got the following: L+3: Brute L+5: Controller, Lurker, No Role, Skirmisher L+7: Artillery, Soldier

Doing the Monster Math for the original MM

As I posted in another thread I didn't have to delete any powers to get MB to update to the new math. There are 4 fields that contribute to each power's damage (for purposes of this I edited a copy of the Goblin Warrior from MM1). I clicked on his "Spear" attack to get it's stats in the middle...

Why is/was melee training so bad?

First let me start by saying it's been a long time since I played 3e, but to the best of my memory (other than the Rogue) there were no melee classes that were NOT Strength primary. Yes I know that Weapon Finesse only granted you DEX to hit, but that is strictly a 3e mechanic. In 4e this...

    D&D 4E Hints on Sandboxing with 4e?

You can get the errata for free from wizards site. They posted the chart there or somewhere for free. I have used the updated MB and I have to say it is really slick. Worth the 1 month sub to get the updates. Every attack now has the following settings: Type: Normal (-) or Limited Use...

    D&D 4E Disarming in 4E

The following is an explanation of point 2. I just want to add to this a bit. The primary reason not to use disarm in 4e is this. If you start with the logic that if the PCs can do it so can the monsters. Reasonable right? The problem with that is the math involved in calculating PC attacks...

    D&D 4E 4E Races, Post-Essentials: Flexibility, You Say?

I'm with you on this "mix of both". Yes. Anything that reduces the swing between the "haves" and the "have nots" is good in my book. Just in base to-hit numbers using weapon classes you have a range of +4 (+2 (14) stat, +2 prof) to +10 (+5 (20) stat, +3 prof, +1 expertise, +1 Rogue or Fighter...

    D&D 4E 4E Races, Post-Essentials: Flexibility, You Say?

For me...racial powers and abilities are more about flavor. Stats are more like that feat you can get that gives you +1 to hit or +1 to damage or +1 to your AC. Since a Rogue with 2 extra points of DEX gets all three of these it's hard to build a Rogue and say.."Well I want to be easier to hit...

    D&D 4E 4E Races, Post-Essentials: Flexibility, You Say?

Small clarification. The new Cleric build is WIS/CON. It basically matches the build I was doing I just have to figure out how to get scale/plate or pass on them until epic if necessary. Edit: And really my whole point was that we currently have reasons a, b, and c that determine the "who is...

    D&D 4E 4E Races, Post-Essentials: Flexibility, You Say?

I was thinking more along the lines of if you wanted (for example) to be a Halfling Fighter (start with an 8 STR based on your suggestions). In order to raise your STR you'd have to first buy the 2 points from 8 -> 10 and then buy it up like any other stat. In effect you are making a 20 point...

    D&D 4E 4E Races, Post-Essentials: Flexibility, You Say?

Ok...here's my story of "added flexibility". In a campaign I am currently playing in I made a Cleric because there were no other PC Leaders. I wanted to go melee so I did the STR build and went with Longtooth Shifter (STR/WIS). As for the build itself I focused on being defender secondary by...

    New Stat Block... With Pictures...

Scribble: I'm sure I should know who that is, but I don't. Please tell! Sorry I can't XP you for that...have to spread some around.

Why is/was melee training so bad?

This is a stretch at best. I'm a melee combatant "trained" to use _________ (fill in the blank with your choice of weapon). I suddenly forget all my "training" under certain circumstances and can't hit the side of a barn unless I get really lucky. At first level I might be able to go along...

A subtle reminder from wizards.(or not so subtle)

Can't XP you DS until I spread some around, but now that I've seen level 10 I think that should be the top.

    Essentials Rogue is up!

I haven't seen anyone mention that a Rogue gets 4 at-will tricks by level 7. This by itself is a change from the 2 at-wills design. However, not that much different from the Wizard if Magic Missile is truly a class feature now.

    The Essentials Fighter

Let me start with the disclaimer. I like 4e and don't feel that "sameness" that some people complain about, BUT, I can see that some people feel that way and here is the best way I can describe it based on one of my players who bitches about it frequently. Note: This explanation only works if...

    The Essential Knight

I suppose I should have added that I didn't expect there to be a way to get both at-wills AND stances and that even if you can that you have correctly pointed out that you can't stack the benefits, HOWEVER that won't stop my annoying player from trying.
