    Empower Spell Metamagic Feat

It's even less than that. 2*1.5=3 3*1.5=4.5 which rounds to 4 4*1.5=6 5*1.5=7.5 which rounds to 7 3+4+6+7=20, and 20/4=5. This is notable because an Empowered magic missile and a Maximized one have the exact same expected damage value. -- gnfnrf

    Factotum spell-like ability casting times?

The black dragon's "Charm Reptile" ability makes reference to several spells, but doesn't duplicate any of them. The bard's fascinate ability. The paladin's special mount ability (though it does specify the action required). The arcane archer's phase arrow ability (and others). Questionable...

    Factotum spell-like ability casting times?

Quoting from the SRD... "A spell-like ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description." Either the ability description OR the spell description can modify the default casting time. In your case, the spell description does. -- gnfnrf

    Spell Turning vs Dispel Magic

That is only for an area dispel. A targeted dispel says "You automatically succeed on your dispel check against any spell that you cast yourself." -- gnfnrf

    LA and racial HDs

The elemental classes are an unusual case, because they are written to match all of the listed elemental sizes at each step. -- gnfnrf

    Confusion with God-Blooded template?

You're approaching this backwards. The level adjustment is for the other abilities, and divine endurance is a bonus you can use if you would otherwise die horribly. If you want the template to be permanent, why not take the advice of the book and make the DR 5/magic with no usage limitation...

    Confusion with God-Blooded template?

The loss is permanent. (Or rather, the ritual must be repeated) Note that Nozgug's tactics involve activating divine endurance only if he is losing, because he wishes to keep his divine talents. Note the reference to losing the template on p 65, under "Gruumsh-Blooded", just above "Special...

Can a Mount be Surprised When the Rider is Not?

If the mount needs to make a spot check and fails, why (DnD round structure aside) would it stand still during the surprise round? Logically speaking, it's been plodding forward for an hour, and now, as far as it can tell, NOTHING HAS HAPPENED (it failed the check, after all), but suddenly it...

    Adventure Specific Forum Support

Way back when, I ran Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, and became a regular on Monte Cook's messageboards, because there was a forum devoted to the adventure. There were countless valuable posts, and it was a great place to ask any question I had. I'm about to start Expedition to the...

    Rope Trickiness

OK, so the vague consensus seems to be that creatures may only enter the rope trick by climbing the rope. Does this mean that dogs and horses can never enter a rope trick? Next, the spell specifies that spells and area effects cannot cross the dimensional interface. What about mundane...

    Rope Trickiness

So, Rope Trick. How, exactly, do you get in? More importantly, are you prevented from getting in if the rope is pulled up? Nowhere in the text of the spell does it actually say either of these things. -- gnfnrf

How exactly does a dispel magic tied to Unhallow work?

And while we're at it, how does discern lies work on an unhallow? Or dimensional anchor? Does a ray shoot out at every target? -- gnfnrf

    Permanency: Inconsistent?

I think the reason darkvision is expensive as a magic item and not permanenciable (is that a word?) on other people is because, as one of the major racial traits, it seems unfair to let people buy into it too soon or too cheaply. -- gnfnrf

What the hell happened? RHoD (spoilers)

They don't, though. Blighters get their own fast spellcasting progression to make up for it, and add ex-druid levels to their caster level. Any creature that can make the phylactery can become a lich. The phylactery requires Craft Wondrous Item, spell casting, and a CL of 11th. Not 6th...

What happen if a fire elemental fails to make the jump over a body of water?

The problem is, what's the alternative? Trying to avoid figuring out what happens when it's actually in water, shunting means that it only has to make half the jump DC to make it across, which is equally as lame. -- gnfnrf

What happen if a fire elemental fails to make the jump over a body of water?

My take on the situation is as follows. Impassible means "unable to cross to the other side", not "unable to enter". Unable to enter is covered by the previous sentence. If a fire elemental tries to jump a body of water, I would make the jump check. If it is insufficient to clear the water...

    Roper strands

Undead are immune to ability damage to physical ability scores (and all ability drain). Fascinatingly, as an aside, this means that undead are immune to green slime. -- gnfnrf

    Of Elementals & Stink Clouds

Undead are immune also because swarms affect living creatures only. Both of these questions (stinking cloud and swarms) boil down to "Is an elemental a living creature for this purpose?" For spells, PHB p. 176 defines "living creature" as "all creatures other than constructs and undead" so...

    Most superfluous rule?

These are rules that I have never seen affect play, despite existing, and therefore I believe to be superfluous in their present form. Death from Massive Damage: While theoretically possible, in twenty to thirty applications, nothing ever has yet lived through the damage but failed the Fort...
