Tell me about these older edition products [old list]

Apocalypse Stone, the - Epic level module; most suitable for blowing up your campaign world. I adapted it successfully to 3e, and I imagine it would work okay in 4e as well. Surprising amount of role-playing opportunities. In many encounters, the party should optimally be looking to *avoid*...

From the new SRD: Monsters in the MM2

...although having said that, the diTerlizzi Planescape artwork of the erinyes back in the 2e days is still, uh, quite something. Yeah.

From the new SRD: Monsters in the MM2

As per 3e, the erinyes hasn't had an equivalent role to the succubus for many years (since 2e Planescape). 3e repositioned her as more of an angelic avenger: raining down fiery death with her longbow, or cutting people apart in melee. I'd expect the same in MM2, which is Good Stuff. The 1e/2e...

From the new SRD: Monsters in the MM2

Fantastic stuff. That's a ton of old-school monster badness right there, and it's no doubt excluding a number of classic monsters which are exclusive to the WotC brand (e.g. new illithid variants, yugoloths, gehreleths/demodands, new beholder-kin, etc). MM2 cannot arrive fast enough.

Best use of rituals you have seen so far?

Our games see a fair bit of ritual use. Water breathing, water walking, comprehend languages, hand of fate, detect secret doors and knock are all favorites. Creative uses: Floating disk to carry a captured enemy while trying to evade pursuit in a mountainous area. The disk allowed them to move...

    Aberrations Green Dragon - Size/Scale?

...which is incorrect. The Aberrations green dragon is Medium sized (i.e. takes up only 1 square on the battlemap). A large green dragon was released in a later set.

    Demogorgon: Lame or Awesome?

Demogorgon > Orcus Demogorgon's probably my favorite demon lord, on account of three factors: 1) 1e MM. 200hp? Whoa! 2) Less played out than the other Big Two. Orcus and Graz'zt have appeared in countless modules and supplements each, whereas Demogorgon is really only notable for Savage...

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

Our 60-minute average is based on a "balanced" party throughout the entire heroic tier; one of every role, with one extra striker or leader. I'm running one campaign with 3 strikers and a controller. Fights are lasting maybe 30-45 minutes, tops. Experience is based primarily on the heroic...

    Dragon Warriors RPG

Other than here, there are occasional threads on the "Tabletop Roleplaying Open" forum at RPGnet. There's a current thread there discussing the use of nonhumans in Dragon Warriors games. Usually, you'll get about one DW thread a week at RPGnet. Note also that Mongoose recently included a Dragon...

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

I DM a group of 3-5 players (depending on how many are available at any given session; usually 4). Our sessions are generally 5 hours in duration, and we usually get 3-4 combat sessions in that time. Combats generally range between 30 and 90 minutes for us... although the longer combats...

    Worst 4th Ed Class

I'd tick the "battlerager fighter" option, if there was one. Broken, un-fun, book-keeping nightmare, slows the game down, etc. Having said that, the other fighter builds all seem fine, as do all the other classes I've experienced so far (everything from PH, + a couple of the PH2 preview classes).

    Dragon Warriors RPG

Choice of class completely determines the character. There are a handful of skills (class abilities) that can be selected within each class, usually at higher levels. For example, a higher level knight can choose (each level) to pick up additional skills like Main Gauche, Weaponskill, Master...

    Highest level you've played

All characters below were played since 1st level (by other players in my group): AD&D: 12th level BECMI: 36th level / Temporal 5 (using Immortals rules) - only possible because we never really played much AD&D or 2e; we were using BECMI virtually until 3e came out, so this character (and a few...

Monster Synergies, and the craziness that can follow...

Oooh... Vine Horrors are nasty. And fun! (...well, for the DM. My players hate them with a burning passion...) Good choice.

No "wider" Sweet Spot in 4E after all?

From experience playing three separate campaigns through to a max of 13th level (so far), I haven't found a "sweet spot" yet. Low Heroic PCs have much more to do (and can last longer) than comparative PCs in previous editions. It feels satisfying and challenging. Low Paragon PCs are a mix...

    Battlerager: Experiences?

I think it's a bit of both, really. He's a poor defender because he's "stupid overpowered". Given my experiences (outlined earlier in the thread), I'll admit the battlerager is an excellent defender, if there are lots of chokepoints on the map, or he can mark multiple targets, or if the DM...

    Art Recycling

I have no problem with a small amount of recycled art. I don't open up my MM and look at the hags and say "OMG! I've been ripped off. One picture has been recycled from Frostburn, and another from Oriental Adventures!". The pictures in questions are good, evocative illustrations of the...

    Dragon Warriors RPG

Some differences from D&D: 1) Armor doesn't reduce your chances of being hit. Instead, it can negate blows that hit. Each attack needs to make a simple "Armor Bypass Roll" to see if it gets past the armor. 2) The ruleset is reminiscent of OD&D Rules Cyclopedia. It doesn't have the complexity...

What is THE classic dragon-hunting/slaying adventure?

B5 - Horror on the Hill. It's not strictly about dragon-hunting, but the final bad guy is indeed a dragon, and there's plenty of fun goblin-hunting on the way. O1 - Blade of Vengeance. This is all about the dragon, and is perhaps the best example I've seen from the older TSR modules. It's...

    Dragon Warriors RPG

Not playing it yet... but I like the minor tweaks made in the new rules. I also like the convenience and quality of getting the bound versions. I've purchased all three books currently released through Mongoose, primarily for nostalgia's sake. Our group might give the actual rules a go sometime...
