Can I ask how they play compared to 'normal' 5e? Is it more like the books or more like any generic starter? Could I place it in FR and be ok, or is there a lot of lore that would need to be tossed or folded in somehow?

Just as the DM giveth, I recall finally finding a girdle to go with my hammer and gauntlets. I was so excited, I did not wait to have the item checked out first- and put on a girdle of femininity. It also struck me as weird to call them girdles- to a 10-year-old boy.

I noticed this with AL as well. Mostly in Tier 1 with some people showing up at a table of 1st level PCs with a 4th level PC. I think most of the modules are designed for 3rd level and it tells the DM how to adjust, but I seem to see it run as is most of the time.

My current campaign has several henchmen that tag along with the PCs. They are level 11 and the henchmen are about level 5 or 6 in power. They think that they are 11th level and tend to drop a lot. Some may be that I make an adventure for 11th level and not 7th.

Pre-5e we tried playing something with all reincarnated PCs as monsters. We had a few goblins and a bugbear hanging out with a lizardfolk. It started out ok with townsfolk hiding children and attacking us and eventually the DM started skipping this to get more adventure in and it fell apart...

I have not tried anything with AI other than seeing a search for something pop up, but I'm sure at some point it will get ingrained enough to be more everyday. I'm also guessing that the prompts get easier to input once you get the hang of how it works.

I would likely not play it or buy it. I can see other wanting it, same like Dark Sun and such, but just not my kind of D&D. At a convention it would be fun to play a one-shot.
